I may be in the minority here, but I like the president's cup. I think any time you can get a strong collection of players to face off against one another it's great entertainment. Plus with fourball and best ball days there's a dynamic people don't normally get to see. I really like watching Vijay, Ernie, and Retief play agianst America's best, and to me it seemed like the participants in the '03 Presidents cup had a lot more fire and passion than the '04 Ryder Cup, so hopefully that'll carry over into 2005. I don't know, but I guess I'm in the minority since I also loved events like Battle at the Bridges which flopped big time ratings wise.

I'm with you on the Battle at the Bridges. That was my first real look at Hank Kuehne and even thought he played like crap, IIRC, it was interesting. And I love the events where the players are mic'ed up and they're more relaxed and joking around. Something Erik alluded to in another thread.

But I didn't vote, cuz I don't know what the heck the President's Cup is. Maybe I'll go look it up and once I refresh my memory (is it the US vs. World thing?) I'll come back and vote.

Ok, US vs. the World. Keep that around. I hate to think that quality players are exempt from competing in a US vs anybody competition just because of their country of birth. Or am I misunderstanding the qualifications of the Ryder Cup? :)

At any rate, I like the whole macho pride tournaments, except when the US isn't winning, of course. They're fun and different from regular tour events. Kinda falls in the same league as the International where they use that modified scoring system. I always try to catch that action when it's on.

Well, I agree with TaylorMadeFan on this one. I love the President's Cup! It has sadly gotten lost in the shuffle of all the Ryder Cup talk. The last President's Cup had me on the edge of my seat the entire final Sunday. I wish more people would have been tuned in to see that action. I think the rest of the world has by far more talent than the Euro team in the Ryder Cup, but I do understand the intensity is a little different with that.

The fact is though: Vijay, Ernie, Retief, Adam Scott, Maruyama, Ames, etc. are all very solid players, and I think it is good for those guys to have the President's Cup.

I think it is a very good thing, and like I said, I wish more people would have watched the final Sunday of the President's Cup in late 2003 because Ernie vs. Tiger was superb, going back and forth stroke for stroke.

So I am definitely all for it, but it looks like a lot of people just don't get excited like they do for the Ryder Cup. But I love that one too!

I'm basically for anything golf-wise...and I don't think it would be fair if the "rest of the world" didn't get something like the Europeans get in the ryder cup. Plus, the course they play at is about 10 minutes away from my house. I live in the next town over, but Manassas is right next to where I am. I got to go the Presidents Cup a while ago, and it was a cool experience.

I like the idea of a 3-way series of Europe v US v International matches, played over the 2-year schedule that culminates in each Ryder Cup.

Something like eg Sept (even years) - Ryder Cup, Feb (odd years) Europe v the Internationals, Oct (odd years) Presidents Cup.

The Internationals playing both of theirs in odd years would at least be the end of one summer and the start of the next in the southern hemisphere, and for the US it would keep to the same schedule as now.

Probably right now the International side would only come as close as they do in the Presidents Cup to beating Europe, but there's every chance that would change over time; and furthermore it would offer twice the chances for a big international team event to get hosted by Australia, South Africa, NZ, or in SE Asia (not sure about Japan in February, might be a bit chilly).

To honour the man whose TV company now monopolizes golf coverage in the UK they could call the new competition the Murdoch Cup.

This topic covers one of the many on which my opinion has changed in the last decade.

The reality is that since the PGA Tour owns the Presidents Cup, and the PGA the Ryder Cup, neither will want to give up their stake (especially the PGA) for some "joint" type thing where they make less money.

And… the U.S. team plays too frequently, while the other teams basically get a year off.

The loser of this year's match doesn't play the next year. Simple as that.

US - Europe next year, the winner plays the RoW in 2017, the winner plays the 2016 loser in 2018 and so on. Loser leaves the table (and the TV money).

Host should alternate, of course. This will solve also the fiasco that was the EurAsia cup project.

Well they have the International Crown now in addition to the Solheim Cup so I'd say the ladies are set.

Do you know what the Ryder Cup venue in 2020 is? How about 2024? Because you do… and yet, there would be no way of knowing which team should host the event NEXT year if this format is followed.

my vote would be to just get rid of it... imo, it's just another silly season event, that is hyped to death to try and get golf fans (specifically american ones) to "care" about it like we (speaking parochially) care about the ryder cup... tbh, american (or anyone else, ftm) fans didn't really care about the ryder cup either until we started to lose... the rivalry (and seve) is what caused people to care*... maybe it is just me, but i can't work up a good froth over the pc, which isn't really much more than a glorified tavistock cup... but as someone noted, the pga tour isn't going to stop doing something that makes them money.... * too much, in some cases... i'm not fond of jingoistic nationalism, it's one of the big turnoffs of the olympic games for me...

You don't seem to understand/appreciate how much effort goes into staging a huge event. They can't just pull things off in 11 months, and it's wasteful to plan for an event you may not even host.
