Hi all, a mate of mine has offered me a couple of CG14 wedges which would finish my set of CG's off nicely. He's had them 5 months at the longest.

How long do grooves on wedges stay sharp?

Ive had my 64 since last August. It isn't as spinny as it was but still plenty of life. I would say a couple of years for the recreational player. If I was a real player I would replace every year, but I am not.

If you don't spin the ball that much, would it matter?

I've seen some talk about groove sharpeners, can they bring back the grooves?

It also depends how they're made. I got ping cast stainless wedges accepting the limitations of them, but knowing that they would wear less and last longer. Forged carbon steel wedges wear very quickly. You also need to apply a little care and keep them oiled. I'm not planning on buying new wedges every season or so, so the ping tour-w's work for me.

Keep them oiled? Care? How would I make my grooves stay longer. I have a sharpener but haven't used it much.

Well let me say that I'm not sure of the precisely necessary care routine, nor have I ever used a groove sharpener. I did some research and talked to people who had carbon steel forged wedges - a consistent theme was that they started showing wear marks quite quickly (and by inference so did the grooves). At least one person had a problem with rust and had to oil that out of his clubs (we get a lot of rain in the UK). Rust is one of the primary ways that an edge deteriorates. For reasons of wear and maintenance, I decided that stainless steel was the way for me. Not least because I keep my clubs in the locker at the club, and I don't want to have to keep taking them home to dry and clean them.

Don't need more than a towel and a club brush on/in the bag to keep the clubs clean and dry. I clean a club after every shot taken, so they are always clean and dry.

Thank you for the info. I have noticed a spot of rust here and there on my 64 which is forged, not sure the kind of steel. Obviously with the oil I have it does rust and is rusty.

I clean my clubs after every shot as well (I keep a bristle, plastic pick, and wire brush tool in my pocket). When it's raining I find that I can't keep a towel, grips, or my glove dry - never mind my club heads. Stainless gives me one less thing to worry about.
