Hi guys,

I am starting to look into replacing my crappy starter irons with something nicer. I am a ~20 hdcp and make decent contact most of the time but certainly have plenty of mishits. I am looking for some decently forgiving game improvement irons that will have some degree of workability so that I won't outgrow them too fast. Basically I am hoping to just get a bunch of recommended sets to check out over the next couple of months so I can do some research as I save up for the new clubs. I currently use a 3w and 4H (22*) so I would most likely want the set to be 4-PW, GW and stick with my 56* CG14 wedge as well as eventually getting a matching 60* CG14. My budget is pretty open but I'd like to stay under $600 or so including fitting costs.

Thanks

I'd look at Adams Golf stuff. Some of there irons are some of the most forgivable I've demoed/played. I like their hybrids. I'm getting the RPMs from my sig next week though.

Has anyone played the MX-100 or 200's? I have heard such good things about mizuno but I am a little bit afraid of the MP series.

I have just purchased the MX-950, and they are great. I have tried the MX-200, too. Both MX-950 and MX-200 are great clubs, but I picked MX-950 cause it's cheaper. $349. They both very forgiven and solid feel and they are very very easy to hit.

are the ping g10's too much on the GI side for me? They seem to be pretty popular

When I was about your handicap, I started looking into replacing my starter set. The sets I was deciding between were the Ping i10, the Mizuno MP-57 (which I chose), and the Bridgestone J36.

If I were making the choice today, I would scope out the Nike VR (half cavity primarily) and the Titleist AP2 also. Have you been to a demo day lately?

I am in the middle of getting my friends Ping i10s - i am an 18 handicap and i can get solid contact with them most of the time and i cant see you having any problems with them. i have tried them and i like them so i am recommending them. i like the look of the MP52 and mx200s so i think u should give them a try if you want something that bit more good looking and special.

There is no such thing as too much GI...

I would reccomend the PING G10s, they are very forgiving, but they also give distance and decent workability.

I haven't been to a demo days in a while and unfortunately I missed the 2 they had this year at the closest pro shop. Anyway, a quick recap of clubs to try:

TM r7
TM Burner XD
Callaway X-22
Mizuno MP-57
Mizuno MX-200
Ping G10
Ping i10

Anything I missed? Also, certain clubs that are 'closeouts' such as the r7... are they typically offered for several more months? I would hate to miss out on getting them if I liked them but waited too long.

The Mizuno MP-52s are the "newer" version of the -57. The other nice thing about Mizuno clubs is that it's easy to mix-and-match between GI and Players' sets - there are multiple threads here about it. The same is true for the Nike Victory Red sets, the Titleist AP1 and AP2 sets, and the Bridgestone J36: easy to mix varying degrees of forgiveness.

In price order:
Wilson Ci7
Adams Idea Pro Gold
Taylormade R7
Mizuno MP-52
Callaway X-22 Tours
Ping G10

I would say go for the Wilson Ci7's. They come 4-GW for $300 and they not only hit well but are rather aesthetically pleasing. There are quite a few reviews on them about how good they are.

Thanks, the MP series numbering confuses me sometimes since I am not too familiar with their products.

It confused me, too, before I bought mine. Plenty of people here helped me with it, and I'm happy to pay it forward.
