I'm finally getting back into golf after a 3-4 year hiatus. I recently purchased the Mizuno MX-200 irons 4-GW and the MX-560 (loud ass) driver. However, I need something to fill the gap that I have between my 4 iron and my driver. I've been looking at hybrids and after reading many reviews, they sound very promising. However, I am having a hard time determining what loft would be best. My 4 iron is 23º and my driver is 10.5º. Any suggestions? I've been eyeing the Nickent 4DX #3, but not sure the loft I would need. From what I have read, the 5DX is awesome, but I'm not looking to spend $100+ on a club at the moment. I want something to get me by for a while until I can figure out exactly what I need.

Thanks for any help.

I would consider a used 5 wood (17 degrees) for about $60 + shipping online

the 5 wood is easy to hit and will be the next club up from the 4 iron, when you become comfortable with the 5 wood you can consider a 3 wood (15 degree) club next for the par 5s.

If a hybrid is the way you are looking then you should consider a 19-20* hybrid, which is what a 3H ususally is. If you look around on eBay and sites such as RockBottomGolf.com you can probably find a good one for well under $100. Such brands as Adams, Taylor Made, Nike (among others) could all be had for $50-75 new if you look around (and of course cheaper if you buy used).

If a wood is what you are considering, then consider a 4 or 5 wood (around 17 & 19* of loft). These will help fill the gap as well, but will give you a little more distance than a 3H, but for some people are a little more difficult to consistently hit as well. Like hybrids you can find a lot of them online for good prices (you might even be able to guy a wood and a hybrid for your $100 - a 3H and 4W would provide very good gap coverage). The best thing to do before you buy anything is try them. Many pro shops at courses will allow you to demo clubs or you can go to any number of retail sporting good or golf shops to test out clubs.

I would say get a 3 wood (15 degrees of loft) and a hybrid 19 degrees of loft.

If you have to choose one I'd say get a hybrid 17 degrees.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
