HELP!

So over the last year, I've been working on my swing fundamentals. I'd say they've improved greatly. I stay on plane, better hip turn, etc. But now I can't hit a driver for the life of me! I am getting good clubhead speed (I can tell by the sound), but they take a quick dive and hook HARD. What gives? I shouldn't have to make a drastically different swing for my driver, so I essentially make the same swing as my irons, but a dramtically different result occurs. Anyone encounter this before? Any thoughts or tips?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

In my bag:
Driver: Taylormade R7 Quad 10.5 deg
5-Wood: Nike Ignite 5-Wood
Irons: Callaway X-20 (3-PW)
Wedges: Cleveland CG12 50 deg, Cleveland CG10 54 + 60 degPutter: Nike OZ MalletBall: Titleist NXT Tour

Is the R7 Quad adjustable? If so, make sure it is set at neutral. Once you have it set at neutral, make sure you maintain a neutral or square club face at address. Check your fundamentals--address position, etc. Good players can get a little closed (with the club face and stance) at times.

If I want to hit a power fade, I'll put the ball up in my stance a bit, open my stance a bit, tee it up a hair higher, and weaken my grip a touch. Then I just put my usual swing on the ball. Hit some power fades with the driver to get the feeling of a fade. Then work your way back to hitting some straighter shots and then some soft draws.

I do occasionally fight a duck hook. When I duck hook, I am usually too closed with my clubface and stance at address.

You might be closing your clubface too much. I'd start by slightly opening the club face more at address. If that doesn't fix it, then weaken your grip a tad also.

good luck

yeah, i've got a problem with this as well. the best advice i can give is to try not to let your wrists do anything, so that it feels like the club will leave your hands on the follow through. when its done properly, you'll barely feel the club shoot off the face. the poster above does offer some good tips, but if it's the same thing i've got, which it sounds like it is because all your other clubs are fine, its your wrist action. the longer the club the more it comes in to play. try teeing it a bit lower and hit down on the ball. when you make your backswing, your hands should come back down directly on that same line, but at a steeper angle. it sounds like you're making a sweeping motion on your downswing, which will give you a duck hook if you're coming from the inside. its definitely an uphill battle, and hard to fight off. i'd suggest going to the range, take your time, and remember exactly what you did when you hit the ball straight, and try your best to duplicate that every time.

i also forgot to mention, weaken your grip!

I had this same problem and it turned out to be my stance. Instead of being square to the target line my right foot was dropped back causing me to line for a pronounced draw/hook.

    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
