when i hit my woods the ball starts lowish then rises up in a curved flight, what is the reason for this and is it a good thing

You are probably hitting down on the ball too much. This gives you a lower launch angle and lots of topspin, which means that the ball balloons. Are you finding that you get hardly any roll on drives?

Whether it's a good thing or not is up to you. Is it affecting your scores enough to fiddle with your swing?

It's backspin. If you are hitting into a head wind then you'll lose a considerable amount of distance. One good thing is that it'll drop like a rock after it rises compared to a non ballooning flight.
