Titleist 909D3 vs. 983E

I have been struggling off the tee for the majority of this year and I'm contemplating a switch to a new driver. I am currently using a Titleist 983E with the Titleist Speeder shaft in X flex. I also have a Taylor Made R7 SuperQuad with an Aldila NV65 also in X flex.

I went to a local golf shop last week to try out a few drivers and hit the R9, R9 460, and Titleist 909D2. Unfortunately I'm left handed and live in Vermont so my selection is very limited. Luckily they had a demo 909D2 head that I could try different shafts in. The two R9's (and the R7 SQ) had way too much spin, even with the TP shaft so they are not the right fit for me. The 909D2 with a UST ProForce V2 79g with a stiff flex worked very well but the flight was a bit high. Unfortunately they did not have a 909D3 demo head so I was unable to try it directly but the club fitter assured me it would be ideal. The specs I would order would be the 909D3 9.5* with the UST PF V2 75 in stiff.

My question is, has anyone been able to use the 983 and the D3 back to back or made the switch? I realize that there are two generations between the two but any info anyone could give me would be great.

I made direct transition from a 10.5* 975 J-VS to a 9.5* 905R.. i realize its not exactly the same change you would be making, but i think its very similar. the 975 was a 312CC clubhead. 905R is 460 of course.

Not to get off topic, but have you tried any of the 07-08 models from Taylormade, Cleveland, Nike etc.? If not, I would suggest doing so. You can get some really amazing performance for a fraction of the cost of newer drivers. But, if you're set on the Titleist, I am a stranger to everything they make except golf balls lol. I would like to get vokey wedges eventually though.

i have had a similar transition
i went from the 905 to the 907D2 also w the UST PF V2 w 77g and 2.1 torque - Stiff
after the shaft change (from the Diamana BB 63g and 4.4 torque)
night and day bro

if i WAS to upgrade, it would be to the 909D3 as well...i think it would be best suited to me
there are a TONNE of 907D2's on ebay for cheap
i picked mine up for $130CDN shipped in PERFECT condish
add another $80 upgraded shaft and it's mint

could consider that?

i have similar specs to you, 6'2", 196lbs and a 112-115 driver swing speed
and use the same FW metal too

Thanks for the insight. I think that the shaft is a must for me. I really like the performance of it. I've seen all of the great deals on eBay but unfortunately being lefty, they don't pop as often for me and when they do they tend to go for a higher price. Thanks again.

I'd had a 983E 8.5 deg with the fujijura speeder shaft for about 4 years and recently had a launch monitor session before buying a new 909 driver. they fitted me with the 909D2 but I was told I could've hit a 909D3 as well. What I'm starting to wonder about is how much does the shaft matter in a driver. Right now, my 909D2 9.5 deg driver has the stiff flex voodoo shaft in it and it feels like a softer flex than the old fujikura shaft. My swing speed is around 108-109 mph, ball speed around 158-160 mph. The ball flight is a little higher than I'd like but the distance is pretty good. Every so often though, I pull the driver left (I'm right handed) pretty far. I've been reading about torque and flex and launch characteristics of different shafts and was wondering if the voodoo shaft I have in this driver might not be what I want. I feel like I need a shaft that might lower the trajectory a little bit but I'm not sure where to start.

I have the exact same SS and Hit the Speedline 9032 with the Voodoo shaft (OEM) it felt 'loose'? I bought a UST PF V2 6060 (66g) Stiff, still not quote right (If you want to get after it, it breaks down)... I just bought the Graphite Design Pershing 75 Stiff, I'm thinking this will be the right shaft, but too soon to tell.

My stats (6'2" 225lb SS 104-112, Ball Speed 158-163mph, prefer Mid Launch, good tempo, medium loading)

There are plenty of Stiff shaft options that should fit your SS. Usually if you look at heavier shaft options it will lower the torque rating. Graphite Design, Accra, UST, Mitsubichi are some manufacturers with low torque rating in stiff shafts. If you don't like a slightly 'whippy' shaft look at the>70g Stiff options . I personally never liked the feel of X flex shafts, your SS prob needs to average 108-110+ to consider X-flex.
