I started playing golf about a year ago, starting first on a cheap local par-3 course. I recently started playing at a full executive course and really enjoy it. I haven't taken lessons yet (too expensive and not much time for them), just trying to learn from my friend and what I read and see on instructional videos. Anyway, right now I'm using a really old set of clubs and they don't always feel comfortable. For instance, the handles are made from some kind of leather wrapping, almost like wicker and don't have a good feel (too thin and hard). I've been researching used club sets and kept finding that Callaway Big Bertha irons get good reviews and keep reading that they are a good set for people starting out, because they are forgiving and are comfortable to use. I've found a couple places online that have 2004 sets for about $200+shipping. They usually include irons 4 or 5 to 10.

Is this a decent set of clubs for a beginner? And what size driver is good for a beginner? I just got one from my grandfather that is more comfortable than my friend's one that I have to share when playing. His is pretty oversized and unweilding to use. i think the one I just got is like 430cc

Check out ebay. Tons of good used clubs on there and some good deals once in a while. Hogan BH 5's can be picked up new for around $170 or so.

Also I've had good luck with 3ballsgolf.com. Good selection of clubs and they seem to be honest with their rating system. Good luck!

Thanks, 3ballsgolf.com is the place I found the Callaway's set at. I'm weary of ebay clubs, I know a lot of people get their stuff off there but you can't trust them all...

I got some used Mizuno MX-23 irons from callawaygolfpreowned.com a couple weeks ago. Decent prices, easy, and it's a big name so it's comforting if you're worried about fakes. Obviously they specialize in Callaway clubs, but they also carry a fair number of other manufacturers as well.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

I second that. For some reason they have very low prices in the "other brands" section. Go find yourself a Mizuno set, usually you can find one for under $150. But make sure it's an MX not an MP.

Keep an eye on Craigslist I scored a great set of Pings near Harrisburg when I was over that way. Some great deals and a face to face sale.

Good luck

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
