Basically i hit my driver very good for me, about 230 right down the middle every time. my short game is pretty good and my fairway woods are good. But i can not hit my irons. i dont know why but i just cant hit them, i always either top/skull it or hit it right or left. Am i supposed to swing a different way with irons then i am with my woods? am i supposed to grip them differently? please give me some advice.

Irons should be hit with the same swing, you will naturally stand closer to the ball which will make your swing plane more upright(which is what you want for irons). You want to hit the ball with a descending blow and contact the ball first, then take a divot in front of the ball. Experiment with ball position with your irons. Make sure you aren't "casting" of "flipping your wrists" on the downswing, that can cause a thin/skulled shot. You could be just pulling out of the shot completely too(standing up). There are many things that can cause it.

Your stance should be be get narrower for the shorter irons and wider for the longer irons(but still narrower than with your woods).

Grip changes are not necessary and will just lead to inconsistency.

i used to have the same problem my golf instructor told me the reason why i hit things skinny and chunky is because my back swing was so fast that i couldnt change gears so he told me to have a nice smooth swing so pretty much a slow back swing and swing just a little harder on your down swing

I had this problem before as well. One simple swing thought resolved it though... Focus on hitting "down" on the ball (descending blow) and make sure you leave the divot (if any) between the ball and your target.

i found the drill of putting a penny or tee a couple inches infront of the ball and focusing on hitting the penny or tee and just let the ball get in the way, helped my iron play alot.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
