So I went out and played 18 after work today. I was really excited to play a bit longer course and work on the handicap. Well.... I stopped keeping score after 5 holes and was just concentrating on making solid contact...

My game is my irons. I strike them solid, period. Today, I pushed quite a few shots and developed a little 5 sometimes 10 yard fade... which I RARELY do,?? I also hit some serious pulls. Now I do pull alot but not enough to make a huge difference, usually pin high just off the green

How does this happen, I just couldnt get the club face square at impact today...., I could not set up properly, nothing. Has this ever happened to anyone?

What do you think happened, even at setup my clubface was a little open, when I tried to square it up, it looked closed...

Man its like I never played before.... Got it somewhat fixed up around hole 16, started hitting solid balls again, but I have NO IDEA what happened.

It was not a fun day, any suggestions are more than welcome!

Thanks!

Jim

Maybe you need to work on your wrists on impact. Are you sure your not cupping your wrists on some of them? Try keeping your left wrist and your club parallel at the top of your back swing. Hope this works and hope you fix it soon.

yea I hope I fix it too. I may have been cupping my wrists at the top because lately Ive been working on the Pelz 3X4 short game stuff. And you do some serious wrist cocking in those short game shots (which by the way is amazing, I can see becoming very accurate inside 100)

What do you mean by parallel at the top? Man I was hitting so well, this sucks having to figure it out again!

Thanks for the help too!

This has nothing to do with your question necessarily, but why did you quit keeping score? I absolutely cannot play if I'm not keeping score. I just can't do the practice round thing. To me, if I'm on the course, I'm trying to score. Maybe that's stupid...

Score??.... id be lucky to finish with doubles today.... I was really disgusted with my game... Didnt even bother finishing some holes, just practicing the 100-200 yard shots... but I hear ya, ill try to score next time too, even if im having a bad day.

I dont wanna get too off topic though, I'd like to hear some more suggestions guys.

Thanks

Jim

I think you are worrying WAY TOO MUCH about swing mechanics on the golf course - recipe for disaster man. Don't worry about your swing on the course. You should be confident over the ball, and worry about making a good tempo, smooth swing, and hitting it at your target - that's it. You should not be worried about anything else besides that WHILE ON THE COURSE.

Once you get to the range after the round, or later in the day, tomorrow, later in the week whatever - that's when you worry about swing mechanics and you go over your round in your head and you realize what your misses were...then try to fix them.

You simply don't fix your swing on the golf course. Maybe make adjustments, like if your really fading the ball off the tee all day, and it starts to turn into the slice, take a 4 iron out of the bag to put in play, or aim more down the left side, or whatever. But don't think about your wrists or any type of swing mechanic while on the course.

Seriously, without seeing your swing, it's the best advice I can give you right now.

Great advice man thanks!! You are absolutely right, from here on out Im not gonna think about mechanics while on the course.

I really think that might help!

But still I was having trouble even setting up today, I dont know what the heck that was all about...

Sounds like you have an independent arm swing that gets ahead of your body movements in your downswing. How do you fix that? I fixed mine with the Master Key instruction ("The Golf Swing and Its Master Key Explained"). Best $6.00 I ever spent on golf.

Thats exactly what it is, an "independent arm swing." Im gonna look into that when I get home, thanks a ton!

    • When I got to Florida this season (seasons instead of years since the years overlap) one of the guys asked what I had done, said I was about twenty yards longer with my driver. Said that I had a different driver which was true but looking back it’s really the shaft that’s been the difference. It’s similar in principle to the Autoflex in that it’s light weight and also light flex. Since most of my clubs are bought used I have difficulty finding senior shafts most of the time and being old and slow that’s what I need. Bought the Callaway driver, for several years I preferred Ping drivers, because they only had a couple of used drivers with senior shafts in my price range and it’s been probably the best I’ve had. Longer and very forgiving, decent distance even on my mishits and almost always in play. Keep in mind that my swing speed is probably under 70mph.
    • Day 17 - First round of the year. It took me about 6 holes to remember how to hit off grass. Short game was lacking, but the round could’ve been much worse. It’s nice that my new “bad” is my old “good.”
    • Yes this was what I was thinking you have two golfers same 5 HC same swing speed 110Mph ...one you changed the driver head to a 10yr old model head but the same loft etc the other you changed shaft ...now if its just 10yr old shaft of the same flex weight etc it would be more so the newer head IMHO ..but if the shaft was changed to softer flex lighter than player was use to then the shaft would be the winner IMHO
