cantputt,

Shaft weight is a critical and often overlooked part of the fitting process. The heavier the shaft is, the easier it is to be on plane and in tempo. However, this will be at the expense of swing speed. Heavier shafts are also stiffer throughout than equivalent lighter shafts. Typically stronger players and aggresive swingers who load the shaft hard tend to fit better into heavy weight shafts. A lighter shaft is easier to load and will help golfers generate faster swing speeds. However, it's easy to get "quick" with a light shaft, resulting in an errant shot. Smoother swingers often feel more comfortable in lighter shfats. It's all about finding the right balance for your swing.

Loading the club hard is someone who has a pause at the top of the backswing or an extreme change of directions.

An extreme example of this is Phil Mickelson or John Senden both of whom start their downswings just before their backswings are complete. Accordingly, the shafts Mickelson used to play (PM702) are extremely stiff throughout.

The general rule is to swing the lightest shaft you can control. When I was going through an iron fitting, I tried the Nippon NSPro 970. They weigh (I forget how much) less than my True Temper DG shaft. I hit the ball all over the face. Sure, it went farther (lighter) when I hit good contact, but I was all over the face. Switch back to the DG S300 and I hit the center of the face a LOT more consistently.

So swing the lighest shaft you can control, that's the general rule.

I love the V2 75... the above is true, it helps my tempo and plane but I lose 1-2 mph swing speed... but the accuracy is worth a 5 yard loss

It is all about the fitting, all about the fitting! My swing speed is avg at 95mph, but because I have a quick tempo and a late release I was fitted with a stiff, heavier shaft on both my irons and woods. I clearly should be in a R flex by looking at swing speed, but it all depends on the fit to each individual swing.
