Is it "easy" to do my own club tinkering? What equipment do I need?

I get tired of having to go to a pro or to a clubmaker in order to have seemingly simple things done such as altering the lie angle, loft angle, etc.

And on top of that, unless I know the person working at that time, it usually costs me a couple bucks per adjustment. I never knew elbow grease was so expensive.

Anyway... I'm curious what kind of equipment I need to buy in order to do this kind of stuff myself, how expensive a project that would be, and whether it's doable for someone who's not had much, if any, training on the matter.

Minimally, you're gonna need a sturdy workbench and bench top. A bending machine (lie, loft) will run you anywhere from $250 - $800. Plus tools, dies, protector's etc.

Visit Golfsmith's website http://www.golfsmith.com/cm/display/category/cm/tools
I like their equipment, the best.

Buy and read anything on club building and altering clubs from Ralph Maltby (Golf Works); His books are the easiest to follow. http://www.ralphmaltby.com/home

If you have a nearby Golf Galaxy (they bought Golf Works) talk to the club builder there and try to get a feel (no pun intended) for the difficulty and/or ease of adjusting lie and loft.

Just my three cents worth ....
I make all my own clubs:

If you're intending to make it a business of yours, then it might be worth it to take some classes that Golfsmith.com offers before buying any of the tools. If you just want to do it to save the couple of bucks, then it is totally not worth it. The cost of the tools, the hassle, the high degree of error and the space you need for all the tools will make it absolutely worthless. Just go get what you need done at any club maker for a couple of bucks in 5 minutes.

Wow, no idea it would be that expensive.

Thanks for the response(s). I think I'll just keep throwing out a couple bucks here or there. I think it'd be fun to learn, but I don't have that kind of money to burn just for a fun (and very occasional, at that) hobby.

    • Day (2 May 24) - somehow I missed posting both Tues and Weds practice sessions - so the streak ends and a new one begins…. Focus today was on ball first contact using the Divot Board for reference.   Worked with 7i, 9i and GW hitting hard foam balls.  Started hap hazardly and then settled back into my pre-shot setup.  Much more consistent in the latter.
    • So, Newey is out at Red Bull. Where does he go in a year? Is Max still with RBR in 2026? Hmmmm.
    • August 2010 Woodfin Ridge 18th hole Playing in a large tournament with a slew of friends and the last day was two man best ball. The 18th, when it was bent grass, was very fast due to a steep slope on the right side. I had seen many people over the years putt off the green from above the hole. I hit a great drive and 3W to 30’ left of the hole. With everyone watching my partner hit it way too fast and never high enough and his ball rolled all the way to the bottom of the green.  I hit mine much higher and the ball came to rest about 20” above the hole. Then it slowly started trickling towards the hole for a walkoff eagle! Nobody said anything except my partner who was yelling pretty loudly. I looked at the crowd and told them it was okay to clap because it was a great putt, and they gave me a bunch of polite golf claps and brought me a beer!
    • Day 127: 5/2/24 Stack Full Speed spectrum training session 6/24. Training speed was 5 mph higher than previous high, as was e-speed. Still not as high as I have done in previous programs, but just 1 mph lower. Battling through a neck issue, and possible trigger fingers. Happy with results.
    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
