You're right about Gay's swing seeming so simple. I've been working on trying to take the club back to about that length on my backswing (mine is more like Daly, well, probably a little shorter, more like Mickelson in his early years) and it's really hard to fix. I think I am going to go to a new instructor to work on it with me.

Actually you can pretty easily. I can setup to the ball at "impact fix" which basically means how my body will look at impact and play pretty good golf.

Impact is a transitional state. You can't set up in a true impact position because setup is (basically) static while impact is based on movement, it's transient. And why you'd want to set up in impact is beyond me. One of the purposes of setup is to enable a good takeaway and backswing - the purpose of an impact position is altogether different.

The simple fact remains that, at setup, 99.999999% of golfers don't have their right forearm on the same plane as their driver shaft at setup, and unless you're extending "on plane" to mean 10 degrees or so, a lot of incredibly good golfers aren't on plane at impact either. Enough of the theory stuff. Back to helping the OP, mmmk? And on that note, a lot of respected PGA Tour Pros even set up with the driver with the ball off the toe. For many it helps them swing out to the ball a little bit (they play a draw). Vijay, you'll notice, often sets up with the ball off the heel and he plays a cut primarily. If you're consistent, you're probably fine, but since we don't have any video or still images all we can really tell you is to visit a local PGA pro that you believe in.
