Alright im able to get the ball consistently high and down the fairway, but i seem to sweep the ball more than hit down on it. and its fine cuz i still get spin and whatnot, but i want the whole consistency of a downblow and the soudn and the huge divot that flys out at the end . And i was also wondering if you guys hit a downblow on irons and woods both? thanks

Why do you want a divot? I take divots only with short irons or with certain kinds of shots. I'm not trying to imply that you shouldn't, so please take my question literally and without any judgment or "hints" at anything: why do you want to take a divot?

Playing Lessons from the Pros with Tom Watson was just on last night and he talked about how he's always been a "sweeper" of the golf ball. He picks it off the turf. With a fairway wood, as with my long irons, I strive for a pretty level blow. I'm still descending and delofting just a little, but not enough to do more than scrape the grass (with the irons) or brush it (fairway wood, hybrid). Again, that's for normal shots (~90% of my long irons/woods). I've occasionally taken divots with my clubs, but usually when I'm trying to throw something way up in the air against a breeze or my ball is in a divot already or a bad lie, etc.

I watched Tom last night too, that was a good show... The only time he took a big divot was when he was hitting an 88 yard pitching wedge. He used a 3/4 swing with the ball back in his stance and struck the ball on the downswing and took a big divot that started about an inch or so past where the ball had been sitting. It was a thing of beauty, they showed the shot in slow motion and it was just excellent. And the shot stuck about 2-3 feet from the hole...

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
