I'm sure a silly question but was curious. I am taking lessons from the local country club PGA Pro and am curious. . . . Is it customary to tip??? I didn't the first lesson but did today. Just curious what the norm was.

Are you paying for the lessons? If not then tip away. If you're paying then hell no. If I'm paying $50.00 for a 45 minute lessons then I'm not tipping, lol.

I am paying for the lessons. And I am not a memeber of the country club. Can't afford that!!!!

If you're already paying then I definitely would not tip.

Yeah, you're pretty generous.

I honestly have no idea if it is normal. I've never even thought of it.

now maybe if I went out after a lesson and shot a super low score due to something we went over and I could master that....but then, I'd probably just tell a lot of my friends to see this guy!

Often they are independent contractors and derive their income directly from the lesson fees, so it is my impression that it isn't expected. But like any service profession, they'll greatly appreciate anything extra. My way has been to not tip them on individual lessons, but wait until after a series of lessons and having a breakthrough with my game and then give them a something nice like a gift certificate for a nice restaurant as an extra thanks.

I agree with this post. You're paying for the time and knowledge. If he's doing something above and beyond, then that deserves a tip.

I get tipped, but more often than not, I don't get tipped. I do not expect it, so it is a nice surprise when I get one. But again, I don't expect it.

I work at a private course and I've priced my lessons at what I think is a good going rate for what the membership is comfortable with. It is a decent chunk of change for the time, which I understand, and is why I don't expect to get tipped. I'd imagine that's what your guy did too.

I've done both, but a pro I used to take lessons from would comp me a round and a cart after the lesson so I would usually tip him.

Not meaning to hijack the tread but do you take a cut (or all) of the money you charge for lessons or is teaching just part of the job and comes under your salary?

After I shot my career low 78 in the Sunday round of the club championship last year I picked up a bar tab for my pro. My short game was giving me trouble and all he did was adjust my set-up a little bit and it made a world of difference after some practice. I was getting up and down from everywhere that day and was so flipping pleased with the result I wanted to show him how much that helped. As it turned out his taste for scotch was hit in my wallet but looking at my nice shiny trophy it was all worth it!

No my lessons are seperate from my pay, and yes, the club takes their cut. Which is the case for most courses. When I first started we got 100% which was bitchin'. New owners, new guildeines. Lame-osity.
