I just started playing this year and now consistently shoot in the mid 90's every round and have flirted with a score in the 80's. Things that hold me up right now are approach shots with my irons.

I purchased the Adams A3 set this summer and have really liked them.

The problem is now after a few lessons and working on improving my swing I no longer push/slice the ball with any of the clubs. I religiously hook my approach shots and just about any shot with my irons now.

I have came across the Idea Pro forged set for a great price and like the idea of a minimal offset. Can you tell me if I am a habitual hooker with the A3's these will help with that along with continuing to work on my swing?

Thanks,

Mike

If you are actually 40+ handicap, I'd think that you would want something a bit more forgiving than the Adams Idea Pro.

If you are hooking everything, it is most likely not the clubs, but an over the top swing, or too much in to out, with too hard a release through the ball.

No doubt that there is something in my swing that is incorrect. I did notice once I switched my 3 wood over to a neutral face it has eliminated hooking. At worst It will draw now. This was my reasoning for wanting to try the Idea Pro irons.

    • That's interesting. I think it depends on which arm you use to lean the shaft forward.  If you predominantly use your leading (left) arm to "pull" the shaft forward (do this by putting your left wrist into flexion), then the face appears to be closed.  Instead, if you use your trailing (right arm) to "push" the shaft forward (do this by supinating your right forearm), then the face does appear open.
    • For many, that will open the face. So, no. It's not universally true.
    • Day 581 - 2026-05-05 Spent an interesting 90 minutes on GEARS Hybrid. Prioritization is important.
    • Day 255 5-5 Getting arm off chest in backswing and downswing. Starting to make a bit of progress. Recorded  and hit foam balls.
    • Day 2, May 5 2026.  I went to putt today;  my usual make-24 drill.  Scored a 35 from 4' and 58 from 6'.   Those scores both beat the bogey player baseline;  I wish I had numbers for something between a scratch golfer and a 90-golfer available for me (I might be able to infer them from ShotScope?).   Either way, I'm happy with that performance.  From 4', 3 coins came up on the second pass and another 3 on the third.  One of these days I might make 12 in a row, which is something I'd like to see 🙂
