High all,

Lately I have been trying to get back into golf. Moved up to Alaska and even though there are some nice places (believe it or not) I just did not have time to travel to them and have not been INTO golfing for about 8 years. (played only a couple times a year when I came back to Missouri)

I have been to a few shops (I'm back in Missouri), to swing a few clubs and there is just SO much out there I have no idea what to get.

I'm thinking about a "Super Game Improvement" set of irons BUT thats only because I'm sure my game is NOT what it once was hehe.

These are some of the ones I'm looking at.

1) Ping G15
2) Ping I15
3) Taylormade R7 CGB MAX
4) Taylormade Burners
5) Callaway X series (18r or 20)

How do these sets of Irons compare? How would you rank them for forgiveness? Feel? All around better club?

Like I said I DO NOT need a Super Game Improvement set of irons, so any other suggestions would be great....

Thanks for the time guys and gals

I purchased a set of TM Burner Plus this weekend. I test drove the Ping G15, Cal X22, TM Burners and Burner Plus and a few others on the list. Not being a great player at this point, The G15s felt sweet when I hit them well, I did not like the X22. The Burner Plus I put on the flag consistently.

My goal is to use them until I break 90 consistently then look to upgrade. Good luck.

did you have a chance to try the Taylormade R7 CGB MAX's? They seem pretty close to the Burner plus's.

Also,

Why did you go with the Burners over the Ping G15's? Honestly I like the R7 CGB MAX's and the G15's teh best and would like to try the I15's some more.

No I did not the R7s were out of my price range, I did not want to exceed $1,000 for clubs I hope to outgrow in 2-3 years.

Consistency, I just hit the Burners better. If you like the Pings also try Cobra, both had a very nice feel when I hit them well. Before you purchase hit plenty of balls, if you can hit them outdoors. Good luck.

I'll put my vote in on TM 09 Burners, their really nice. They are forgiving and will suit you well as you become better.

Aerolite III bag
MP600 10.5*
F-50 15*
MP57's Project X 5.5 3-PW
CG10 56* RAC 52* 60* 2 Ball putter ProV1/ProV1X Blackberry Storm GolfLogix

Add the Nike Sumo irons to that list - you definitely won't be disappointed!!

I demo'd the Callaway Big Berthas, Ping G10s, TM Burners, Cobra S7s and Nike Slingshots...Sumo's came out trumps IMO!

SO far it sounds like I need to try these out:

1) TM Burners
2) Cobra's
3) Nike Sumo's

Reply,

What set did you like best out of the TMs, Cobra's, and Ping? Also, you ever try those TM R7 CBG Max's? OR the NEW Ping G15's?

Hmmm so no love for the Pings huh? (G10, G15)

Ping makes good irons but proaby not for such a high handicap. if u want a set of forgiving irons my advice to u is to get the callaway x18 set. with the cavity back it is easy to hit and forgiving on mishits. also it will give u an acceptable distance till u get back to playing better golf.

Cheers

07 Burner regular flex. (my dads-doing wonders with it) :D

Where did you just move to in Alaska? I live on Elmendorf. I love this place! Where are you playing golf up here? I've been going to Eagle Glen.

Elmerndorf hmm thats the Air force base right?

NICE, I have actually played there with a buddy that lives near by. (Harder course than I thought it would be hehe) I remember my buddy saying Moose (something) is pretty good too you might wanna check it out. I have now moved BACK to Missouri so I play at courses here, but when I lived in Fairbanks I was sooo busy with work I didn't get out much at all.

Personally, I liked the Nike Ignites. I play that set now, and personally preferred it to the sumo or Slingshot sets. Ignite sets are $299 new these days, and less elsewhere. for the price and and skill level, coming up from shooting 125s with blades, it was the perfect choice last year.

I hate the Burner irons. My friend has them and I've hit them a couple times, but I could never get used to them whatsoever.

I'd say go with the G15's, a little more forgiveness than the I15's.

I think I have realized that I'm gonna have to go swing them some more are REALLY decide how they feel. I will also check out those Nike's

bogeyhitter25,

Have you tried the Pings? Wondering how much the G10's and G15's differ

Yep - I was in a similar boat... same pings for the past 10 years.. and only played once or twice the past few years. I went and hit a million clubs (most of what are listed here) and found the X18R's the most forgiving as well as just nice to hit.

I've played 4 rounds on them in the past month and just love the decision I made

    • When I got to Florida this season (seasons instead of years since the years overlap) one of the guys asked what I had done, said I was about twenty yards longer with my driver. Said that I had a different driver which was true but looking back it’s really the shaft that’s been the difference. It’s similar in principle to the Autoflex in that it’s light weight and also light flex. Since most of my clubs are bought used I have difficulty finding senior shafts most of the time and being old and slow that’s what I need. Bought the Callaway driver, for several years I preferred Ping drivers, because they only had a couple of used drivers with senior shafts in my price range and it’s been probably the best I’ve had. Longer and very forgiving, decent distance even on my mishits and almost always in play. Keep in mind that my swing speed is probably under 70mph.
    • Day 17 - First round of the year. It took me about 6 holes to remember how to hit off grass. Short game was lacking, but the round could’ve been much worse. It’s nice that my new “bad” is my old “good.”
    • Yes this was what I was thinking you have two golfers same 5 HC same swing speed 110Mph ...one you changed the driver head to a 10yr old model head but the same loft etc the other you changed shaft ...now if its just 10yr old shaft of the same flex weight etc it would be more so the newer head IMHO ..but if the shaft was changed to softer flex lighter than player was use to then the shaft would be the winner IMHO
