First time I was in a launch monitor was about six weeks or so again, when I picked up a club for the first time at age 35. My awkward driver swing was about 75-80mph at that time.

Given a month of practice, my second time had me swinging a surprisingly consistent 95mph every swing.

NOW -- I'm wondering about shaft flex. That swing speed is riiiight there on the cusp of regular versus stiff flex. I'm getting ready to take a few lessons, and I'm fairly athletic/coordinated (Been a martial arts and baseball guy since I was a puppy)... I'm thinking my swing speed will pop up a bit once I get some lessons in mechanics.

Should I start looking into stiff flex shafts, or stick with the regulars?

Currently in my bag:  Under Revision

go for the stiff flexs....at that swing speed even though u are right on the cusp u will be able to play them and get a little bit better control if u muscle up on a swing or take a little bit off.

I too am right at the 90-95 area. I went with regular flex for all my clubs because after 12 or so holes (moreso if I'm walking) I can't guarentee I'm swinging triple digit speeds. They also seem to go higher which I like for certain clubs, like driver

Swing speed is to limited a way to judge. Tempo, ball flight etc are important parts of the equation. I would wait until a couple of lessons and ask the pro what they think. Given the cost of new shafts, why not get fit and buy irons at the same time if you can afford it.

I second this opinion. Tempo isn't considered enough when shaft shopping. If you are jerky on top, maybe stiff is the right choice for you. If you're real even and smooth, maybe regular is the way.

I've always heard to err on the stiff side,i mean if it is a little to stiff you might lose distance but gain accuracy.Vise versa for the regular shaft

If your on the cusp, usually you stay with the lighter flex, in your case Reg. If you want a little stiffer, try a heavier weighted shaft. Usually (not always) the heavier shaft will play a little stiffer.. Hope I helped

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
