Hey guys got a quick question for you,

I'm 6'4" tall, i currently play standard length clubs. I have known that they have needed to be lengthened for quite some time. I just started at the Golf Academy of America(formerly San Diego Golf Academy) and they have changed up my posture and said i need longer clubs. News that was known to me already haha. I play to an 8 handicap right now, and my iron swing speed is 95 or so. My question is, instead of sacrificing shaft flex and consistency with butt end lengthening under the grip, could i take a shaft from my 3iron(don't play) and slide it into the head of my 4 or 5iron and lengthen all my clubs by using the longer shaft from the club or two up from it.(for instance old 7iron shaft into 8 iron or 9 iron depending on length needed.) Any feedback would be great because curiosity is killing me haha.

thanks,

-Tim

I wouldn't think that would be a problem assuming all the flexes are the same. I will say that as a tall guy myself (6'5"), my scores dropped and my confidence rose the first round after getting properly fit. The extra inch made a huge difference. hehe. Seriously.

As I understand it, the only way it wouldn't make a difference would be if each of the clubheads also weighed the same amount, which they probably don't. If he were to take the shaft out of say, the 7 iron, and put the head of the 9 on it, I believe the flex would effectively be softened because the head of the 9 is typically going to weigh more. I imagine the difference would be pretty small though, whether it would have a smaller effect than putting extensions in the existing shafts I don't really know...

If you like the heads, the best (though also most expensive) solution would be to take them to a custom fitter and have them re-shafted and frequency matched so you know they're consistent across the board and correct for your swing speed. Off the shelf club sets are rarely as good in this regard as what a good clubmaker can do. I'm also 6'5"ish, and played with standard length clubs for a long time. When I finally got clubs with longer shafts the adjustment wasn't quite as natural as I was hoping for. Your experience may vary, but like any other change it will probably take some getting used to. Though you'll be better off for it once you do adjust.

here is the thing, with the school i get all club fitting and labor and all that done for free in our club repair lab. and our club fitter just so happens to be zach johnson as well as a few other pro's personal club fitter haha. but yea i will hafta discuss the weighting issue with him at some point, i just wanted to know if this would be possible.

Possible, yes. But shafts themselves aren't that expensive, so if you can get the labor part of reshafting them for free I think you'd be crazy not to do it. The final product would be WAY better.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
