Well i just started playing golf seriously this year, And purchased anew set of Irons Wilson Staff Ci7, which are not the most expensive club, but i bought what i could afford at this time in my life, Iwas Given a new Driver 3 weeks ago,(Talyor Made R7), and now iam looking into a Hybird, or a Lob Wedge, Iam looking at a Taylor Made Rescue Club? And in Wedges looking at a Titleist Vokey 60*? Iam up for sugestion on these two clubs, which one first? and is there something you like better. Iam kinda new at this stuff, looking for some help, from the guys that play alot.

Thanks for your Time
Dave

11 handicap is good for somebody that isnt serious about the game. Youre better than the average golfer. But anyway, your irons are very good, dispite their low price. The r7 driver is also a good club. As far as your wedges, pick one that fits the coverage you need. Dont get a 60 just to get a 60. Titliest, Callaway, Cleveland and Mizuno all make excellent wedges. But you cant go wrong with a vokey wedge.

I agree with the previous poster. I think you'll find that you might go a couple of rounds and never use a 60 degree wedge. I carry a 50, 54, and 60, and most often I'm using my 50 or 54 when chipping around greens depending on the shot. I typically use my 60 when I'm about 80-85 yards out, as that is a comfortable full swing for me. With the 54, I can put the ball back in my stance on a short chip to get a low runner, or I can move it forward, open the clubface to get a more bounce-and-stop type of shot.
I was just at the store today and hit the new TaylorMade rescue hybrid, a 4-iron 22 degree. The face has a ton of pop. I hit it noticeably farther than the Nike SUMO2 3 hybrid I was also trying out.

In the bag:
Ping G5 Driver 9 degree, Ping G10 3-wood, Nike 3 hybrid, TaylorMade R9 Irons 4-AW, Cleveland CG15 56 and 60 degree wedges, Odyssey 2-ball blade putter

I haven't tried these personally, but I've heard lots of experienced people on this board and others recommend Adams and Nickent for hybrids for their price/performance ratio.

In the blue Colts bag:

Driver - FT-5 10°
Hybrids - 4DX 15.5°, 20°
Irons/Wedges - CI-7 4-GW, SW | "Free" Warrior 60° LWPutter - TiffanyBalls - various

David, Thats not a true Handicap? As iam probably somewhere around a 18, I have never established one. I really dont know why thats at 11 I should probably change that? I've played golf in the past, just for Something to do with my Dad and Brother, they were the golfers in the Family, But this year i have really taken a liken to the Game and try and get better each and everytime out, I have taken a few lessons also and thats helped alot, Money well spent? It must be the age thing iam 50 this year, and wish i would have taken it more serious when i was with my Brother and Dad, So i do have some concept of the game. I just wish they were closer to help me with my game. I have a Gap wedge but iam not real sure what the degree is it came with the Irons, I also picked up a Sandwedge from a Garage sale, that looked in decent shape, plus the price was right $(2), Its a pretty decent club, and getting better with it, I took a lesson the other night working on Sandtraps, and was taught alot, and that part of my game is getting better, just wish the season was'nt winding down, I still have alot of golf left, its just i know whats around the bend,(Old Man Winter), Only if i lived in Fla or a State with warm weather year round? Maybe someday. I will give Adams and Nickent for HybirdsA try, When i get to the city where they have more choices other then Kmart? Are Kmart has to be the worst one going? Golfsmith and GG are a hour drive, and iam making a list.

The lofts are more important in your wedges than the "sandwedge" or "gapwedge" designations. A good baseline is to have 5 degrees or so seperation from your pitching wedge. If your PW is 47 degrees, try to get a 51 or 52 degree gap. For your next wedge you can go with a 56, or even a 58..

The arrival of winter is something that most golfers cringe, but there are ways around it and you can still improve your game. Even something like practicing your set up and grip at home can go a long way.

In order you answer your question, Captain Hook, I'll consider this scenerio.

One of the guys that I play a good bit with approaches me just prior to our round and we work out a game. He says he wants to make it even more interesting and that we each have to remove a club from our bag before the round.

Guess which club of mine is coming out first: my 58 degree LW.

Let's say we kept on removing clubs....I'd give up my driver maybe next.....and so on.

My hybrids would make it a few cuts into this whittling process.

    • So I am aware that "the committee is allowed to set its own standards of player conduct in a code of conduct adopted as a local rule" (rule 1.2b) I also understand that there are some aspects that are allowed to be entered, and some that are not allowed.  My question specifically is: In which form does this code of conduct need to be available? Is it enough for someone to say "that's part of our code of conduct", or is it a requirement, that the code of conduct is in written form? Also, is there a need that the local rule points to the code of conduct in any way?   For better understanding: I'm playing competition and the next course that we play has a "no smoking policy". I don't have a problem with it, as I don't smoke anyway, but one of my team-mates does, and someone told him "You'll get disqualified if you smoke on the course".   Now I have looked at their local rules and there is no reference to a "code of conduct". I'm not sure if they even have an official "code of conduct" that states that smoking is not allowed.   I fully agree that he SHOULD respect this request from the club, but I am wondering if the club would really be allowed to DQ this player for this, if it's not properly documented in their local rules/code of conduct?  This is an official national amateur tournament, so not just something organized by a club for its members.
    • A few months back I purchased the following swing aid on Amazon ($130). It is solidly made of steel and heavy and stable in use. I use it both at the range and at home. Swing Plate Dual PRO by Jamie Brittain - Swing Analyzer Aid - Fits Standard 8mm Alignment Rod Sticks - Teaching Swing Plane Perfector - Indoor/Outdoor Golfing Practice. This winter I set a goal for myself to improve my backswing/downswing to be more consistent and on plane. I had a two way miss with my approach shots this past golf season. I have a hitting set-up in my garage, but I needed something to provide feedback while swinging the club. I came across the Swing Plate while browsing YouTube.   I set it up with the correct angles for my 8 iron. I started out with just the back rod in place, which prevents me from getting too far inside on the backswing. Started out slow and as I got comfortable increased my swing speed. Now I also came across a YouTube video on building a better backswing and getting more width in the backswing and added that to my practice. That video is here:    This video is a bit wordy since you are basically a fly on the wall as Ian gets a lesson. It took a few replays to be able to get the substance of the instruction. It was well worth the effort. Over the last two weeks I have been able to get out on the course and gauge how successful my practice has been. Overall, my consistency with approach shots has improved greatly. Incorporating the added width in my swing has also added a few yards to all my clubs.  What has your off-season training been like?
