can someone give me some advice as to how to reduce the spin off the ball coming off my driver. I play a Ping G-10 9 degree with stiff, stock shaft. I have tried to change my swing a little bit to try to get a little more of a sweeping swing, but I don't want to change too much because I am still hitting the ball 240-260 off the tee and pretty accurate. However, I feel like I am losing about 15-30 yards because of the amount of backspin I put on the ball off the tee. I have tried numerous golf balls (nike one, taylormade tdp, pro-v1, precept tri tour, etc, etc). My next step is to buy a new driver, but like I said I like the G-10 and would rather keep it.

What leads you to believe you are getting a lot of backspin?

the ball has literally spun back on the fairway, or most of the time the ball checks up and stop dead int its tracks. I know it sounds ridiculous but it happens.

This happens to me too occasionally. Sometimes I get more backspin with my driver than I do with my 8 iron.

I think I'm hitting down on it too much, swinging it like an iron.

it happens to me alot and im starting to think it might be the ball im playing with, because if the ball doesnt compress the driver face will be interacting with the cover instead of the core adding spin

That doesn't necessarily mean too much backspin. I can make a ball do that with no backspin. It enters the ground and pops out backwards. That's different than spinning backwards and likely has a lot more to do with the ground conditions.

It has a lot to do with where you hit the ball on the clubface. If you watch any swingvision sequences on youtube of the pros you will see that they hit the ball high on the clubface creating less spin. Now how you start hitting the ball higher on the clubface is a whole different animal.

Try to use a smaller tee and move the ball 3 inches towards the middle of your stance. Experiment with that and by trial and error, you should cure that. Apparently, everything else is aligned correctly. Also, try to draw the ball more on your drive on straight fairways with an inside to out swing.

Does the ball fly sky high? A lot of backspin should cause the ball to rocket up like an iron hit.

I would suggest playing the ball a little more forward in your stance and/or changing the height you tee the ball.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I will try them all!

Simland,

Ocassionally, my ball will spin up into the air like an iron shot and it will come straight down, about 180 out.

I think the key here is position of ball in stance and tee height. There is not going to be a person here to tell you how to not spin the ball backwards on a driver. It will come with a trial and error. Move the ball up and down in stance and adjust tee height, use a marker and make a line to see how high you tee'd up and stay consistent with that.
