Looking for a little better accuracy so I bought a used set of Callaway X-20 Tours with 6.0 rifled shafts. I had used a demo 6 iron and played fine with it.

On a side note...I have Callaway hybrids and an X-Tour 3 wood with Uniflex shafts. I hit those quite well.

Can hit the irons straight...but sometimes hitting a fade. I am guessing this may be coming from the less offset. So I am thinking I can probably improve my swing enough to deal with the fade. Please correct me if I am wrong.

My main issue is a major loss of distance. I hit my old Tour Exotic stiff 8 iron 150 yards with a decent swing. With the X-20 Tour; I can barely hit it 135-140 yards. I am guessing the heavier shaft is affecting me.

I am considering these 3 options:
1. Change to a uniflex shaft which is about 10-15 grams lighter because I hit the hybrids good with the uniflex.
2. Change to a 5 or 5.5 rifled shaft.
3. Change to a plain X-20 iron with a lighter shaft. Which one?

Any help is appreciated,
Mike

You forgot the most important option!

4. Go get your swing speed checked on a professional launch monitor.

If you are hitting the ball flush every time with the 8 iron, and it is only going 135-140, then you definitely don't need to be playing 6.0 rifle shafts. But the most important thing is to get that swing speed checked to find out what shaft stiffness to use. Good luck.

Thanks for the comments and suggestion. Six years ago I had a monitored swing speed of 110mph. But I had a shoulder problem and rehab.....so no doubt that plus the fact that I just turned 50 has probably slowed me down.

What tricked me was playing the trial round with the 6.0 rifled demo 6 iron. I was hitting it 165-170 yards....which is about right for me. But I guess playing a whole round with the whole set is perhaps tiring me out a little.

I settled down a bit and shot 4 over on the back nine but it was an extremely short course. I am capable of making solid contact.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
