I have had my Taylor Made Oversized Irons now for about 10 years. I bought them new when I was in 8th grade. I think its time for something new. Trying to keep the budget under $600-700 I think, probably going to end up getting them on Ebay.. Prices look pretty good.

I was looking toward a more tour inspired iron, mainly for the head size. I think a thinner blade would work better for me. I take HUGE divots if that makes a difference!?

I have a real hard time getting my irons to get alot of height, but distance doesnt really seem to be a problem.

I'm not really partial to any brand, but have had my eyes on the Callaway X-18 pro series, Mizuno 32/33/37s, Taylormade Racs so far... Are there others to consider..

Other info (not sure if needed, but i'll include): 5 index handicap, I have a fairly decent draw on all shots (natural), also have a pretty high swing speed (100-120mph), keep in mind the divots!?

Should I also consider The Taylor Made R7 XDs? ($550)
Thanks to all who contribute!

i'm not sure how much the titleist 690 series irons cost now but when i bought them i paid about $900. i previously used callaway x-14's and upon purchasing my 690.cb's i immediately started hitting my irons farther and a bit higher. my divots also got shallower when i made the switch. so i suppose what im getting at is you should definitely give the titleist 690. series a good looking in to. they have both forged cavity and muscle backs, whichever you prefer.

Most people will say "103-105" or "107-110". They won't provide a range of 20 MPH. What range does that cover? PW through driver?

Well if you like the blade design i would push for Mp-32s. I would have the Mp-60s allready but it's too close to school golf to try to get used to an iron set in a week.

MaRx, If you're cutting deep divots with your current clubs, you will be digging absolute trenches with a set of narrow soled blades. I'd stay away if I were you. Also, height and distance are very closely related, so I don't really know what to think about your relationship between the two. Are you getting most of your distance from roll? I'd say you're a very good candidate for a club like the Titleist 755 or Bridgestone's J33 cavity irons. Both of which have a wider sole than traditional "blades" yet still have a narrow topline. They will also help you with your height issues since cavity backs just about always launch higher than muscle backs. In my opinon, the X-Tours would probably be the best club for you. A very wide sole with lots of bounce and a blunt leading edge, they will not dig at all. They're a full cavity with perimiter weighting and feel very nice. The only thing you might have to get used to is the fairly thick topline. The R7 XD's are a good club if you want to buy a couple of gap wedges and drop the 3 and 4 iron since the lofts are so darn strong. Basically, there are far better clubs on hte market unless you want to hit 150 yard pitching wedges.

    • Thanks for the reply. I downloaded a software update and can now measure swing speed without a ball. Without a ball and with an all out effort, I can get over 100mph swing speed. But as soon as I put a ball in front of me, I tense up and the swing speed is back to low 90's. More work to be done!  I am also excited to tweak everything to see if I can improve smash factor.

    • Kind of reminds me of my first driver - a TM R580 at a whopping 400cc.  Still have one in the stable - and like to hit it on occasion.  Makes me wonder if the Mini-drivers of today are a testing ground to drivers of tomorrow of the powers that be opt to roll back driver head size in conjunction to the ball roll back to limit the overall distance.  I’ve not done a lot of research on shot distances between the mini and regular drivers, but figured there is some.  Will be something to follow as the mini-driver unfolds.

    • I agree with you, at least in regards to myself and playing. I can't really speak much for others. I assume that some people who are playing golf very often can notice more drastic differences. That being said, I do notice some differences here and there and sound and feel definitely have some say in which ball I end up liking. But that seems more psychological than physical. I've only been playing golf regularly for a year now and I'll play almost any ball since I often lose balls. However, since I've been able to get out once a week for a while now, I am down to losing only about 2-3 balls from losing 10-14 per round. Which feels huge for me and so I've begun to narrow down the balls I choose to play with. I've gone through a box of Vice Pro Plus, Vice Pro, Sugar, Titleist DT Trufeel and Kirklands. Bought a bucket of 350 used balls which had a majority of Srixon Soft Feels in there. I decided to give the Soft Feels a try and have really been enjoying them quite a bit. Only yesterday did I hit a Pro V1 for the first time and it felt quite nice. However, that all being said, I have to admit, I've played my best overall with Vice Pro Plus balls. I get the most distance from these balls and am able to hit them quite well. I am not sure on green side spin/grip, I think I'd prefer them to check up a bit more. But I believe one really big factor for me with these balls is that I usually club down when hitting them because I gain so much distance off of them and I also tend to bring my swing speed down which causes me to have a more accurate swing and ball strike. As opposed to trying to whack the snot out of the ball each time, which ends up in a slice 75% of the time. I do love testing out new balls though, sound and feel is always fun to experience.
