First Glimpse: Titleist 755 irons!

Mr. FedEx surprised me this morning with a box full of the new Titleist 755 irons for review. The irons are up on Titleist's website now if you want to take a look.

At first look, the 755s look great. They are not nearly as big and offset as the 775.CBs I reviewed a while back. They have the same basic look as the 735.CMs at address, with just a touch more offset and a slightly thicker topline. But these babies scream "Titleist" when you set them down behind the ball.

The cavities are very slick-looking. The red aluminum "chip" looks sharp, very slick. I know some people liked the black version some tour players had, but the red was the right choice for retail. Good mixing of a futuristic look with the classic Titliest profile.

The Tour Velvet grips are a good choice, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Tri-Spec shafts play. I'll try to take some pictures later, and then get to the range to test the 755s out. Any questions I can answer?

I've taken some crummy pix to show how the 755s look. Have at 'em.

BTW, I went to the range last night and worked through a large bucket with the 755s. With so much weight low in the clubhead, it's no surprise that these irons hit the ball high. But it is a strong trajectory, not a ballooning flight. Also, the clubs are very stable. I hit a few shots well out on the toe and expected a quick hook. The 755s kept the ball flight to a pull, not a big spinning hook. Nice.

The feel was very solid, and I can't wait to get these sticks out on the course this weekend.

From the face side, they look a lot like my old DCI990's, but wow! on the backside. The red insert should do a lot to catch golfer's eyes. Who do you think these will benifit? The low or mid-handicapper most?

I like my 990's, but I decided to play the EVO blades because they just have a better feel and work the ball better. Where would these new 755's fit compared to the 990's?

Nice looking sticks! What type of player is this iron marketed to? I just bought new irons but I'm always looking at what might be next. Looking at these clubs I'm guessing they'd be right up my alley when the CG4's are ending their run; which for me is when my handicap gets to < 10 .

cdriver: I never played the 990s, so I can't offer a direct comparison. But you're right, the 755s have that "Titleist look" so many people love, especially at address.

I think the 755s will be good for mid-handicappers, and also low-handicappers looking to hit the ball higher. You can't really tell from my dark pictures, but the cavity is actually quite shallow. The forgiveness comes from having so much weight low in the heel and toe. That seems to help correct shots hit on the heel and toe area, but it should also mean that the 755s will let you work the ball (when you hit the ball on-center, but with the clubhead coming through from inside or outside to hit a draw or cut).

We'll see how all this theory plays out on the course. But I'm very impressed with the 755s from my practice session last night.

That red thing is basically just decorative and to fill space - it weighs almost nothing. If you imagine it "not there," you can see that the 755 has a nice "notch" kind of like the 735s - the notch behind the face puts weight towards the toe and the heel.

For the past week I have been deciding whether to purchase the 735 or the 775 irons. I went through a custom fitting and the pro said either one would fit my game well.
Now that the 755 is coming out I am not sure what to do.
Is the 755 meants for players that are inbetween the 735 and the 775 as the name implies?
Or is the 755 meant to replace the 735?

Have not seen these irons in person yet, but it appears from photo's that they have a lot of offset?? Can someone who has hit these clubs tell me what difference this makes, and if offset is only for higher handicappers??

Hello there I got fitted in Vegas about 18 months ago in the Callaway centre while on holidays. I was using the Callaway x-16,s and I went from 19 to 12 in 3/4 months. So I stayed with the Callaway fusions and I went down to ten last summer. I bought a new driver there a few weeks ago (Taylor made r 7-460) got it customized. So I brought my Callaway fusion 6 iron with me to warm up with .The pro asked me out of curiosity to check out tyhe six iron against his computer fitting system I hit ten balls and he was shocked to see that my rpms for backspin was 7500.Hepointed to a chart to say they should be between 4500 and 5000 rpms. My average distance with the callaway six iron was 150 yrds .He gave me a ping S58 and I hit ten balls the rpms came down to 4200 and I was hitting the ball average of 185yrds.My club pro has asked me to look at the titleist irons which ones would you reccomend for me would the 755's be a good choice for me .I wrote to you as your using the callaways as well I'm interested in your opinion thanking you DARREN.
