I've been playing much better this year with my slingshots and hitting the ball fairly well. I'm still shooting in the 90's, but mostly because of my crappy putting. I'm getting sick of the dead feel my slingshots have. I'm thinking of switching over to the Mizuno MP-52's or MP-57's. I have a MP-52 6-iron that I take to the range and I've been hitting pretty well with. I love the buttery feel! The distance is comparable to my slingshots. Is there much of a difference between the 52 vs. the 57? I can't decide which one I should go to.

The 52's are more forgiving than the 57's. In the 52's, you have dual muscle design with CNC milled pocket and a cavity back in the 3-6 irons (or 3-7 I am not sure) for increased forgivness, while in the scoring irons (7-PW or 8-PW) you have the traditional cavity back with the dual muscle design for increased feel and control.

The 57's utlilize the same cut muscle design that was first introduced in the MP32s. You have a traditional cavity back design with a cut muscle design for added forgivness and enhanced control.

The 52's are designed to be more forgiving than the 57's, so I'd get the 52's if I were in your shoe, but you can just go and hit everything and see which you like most. Give the MX200 and the new MX300 irons a look as well, they're more forgiving than the 52's yet have the same buttery smooth feel of the MP line irons.

The Sand Trap has done reviews of both sets; the 52s and the 57s, they're very informative with very good pictures, check them out as a start.
My achievements:
Eagles: 0
Birdies: 18
Best Round: 89

I was more or less where you are now when I decided to switch to the -57s. I did so because the -52s weren't out, and I was comparing to the -60s. Golfaway's summary is right on. Don't let distance be a deciding factor, but it's good that the distance is comparable. The MPs are probably "weaker" lofts, but there are a multitude of reasons for that.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
