Damn, that is one nice course - it's the USMA's home course.

I played there last Friday (my cousin got married there this weekend - everything was first class), and ended up being paired with a guy who knew my dad and my uncle who both graduated from there in 1969.

That being said, I knew I not only was representing myself out there, but representing my father as well. No cussing out loud, helicoptering clubs, all that kind of thing had to go out the window. I ended up shooting a 78, but it could have easily been a 68 - I had at least eight to ten strokes I lost because I didn't know where to place the ball off the tee, how to manage different pin placements, etc.

I think that taught me something about golf being a gentleman's game, and to conduct yourself as such. I am going to do my best to control myself on the courses I play out here as a result. Hopefully it will have a positive impact on my on-course performance next season.

Nah, I'm just going to imagine I'm at West Point anytime I feel like doing something stupid out there. Hopefully that will help - my temper has been a major detriment to my game and has impeded my goal of getting to scratch or better this year.

I work at USMA. I have played West Point only once this past summer but it is a great course and cheap for me because Im DoD.

It has alot of slope, but its really fun. A bit challenging. Next summer I hope to play there alot more. I live in Jersey so thats why I did not play there more.

There are so many holes on that course that are one-of-a-kind.

I tried to roll up my slacks, take off my shoes and socks, and hit a shot out of the edge of the pond on 8 after I bombed a 2-iron about 270 yards down the middle, and it decided to roll, and roll, and hang up in the rough on the edge of the hazard - thought better of dumping a new Pro v1 in the drink and took a drop, and made bogey. On 13 (the 18 handicap hole), I had a total shankopotamus with my 9-iron into the woods - had to re-tee, hit an 8-iron short, hit the lob wedge off a crown, and then made about a 40-footer for a 5 (all the while saying to myself 'don't make 7!'). The elevated tees on 14, 15, and 16 offer some of the nicest views I've ever seen on a golf course (the only one that surpasses it is the 14th hole at Mahogany Run in St Thomas (I've parred that sucker both times I've played it, btw)). I don't see many courses that close with two short par 5's, but 17 and 18 are both really neat golf holes, as it's just as easy to make bogey or double as it is birdie or eagle (if you're interested, I got hosed on a 5 ft birdie putt on 17 and sniped a 3-wood onto the 17th fairway off 18 tee and had to hit a lob wedge over the oak trees to get back into play, ended up bogeying 18 with my wife watching from the rental car - kinda embarrassing). I wanted to get a picture by the shed on the way to 16 tee that says 'Army Golf', that would have been pretty cool. That course is something else, man.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
