I did the best putting of my life years ago with a traditional blade putter - the type Ben Crenshaw plays. Anyway, I stumbled upon an exactly replica of the putter I used then. Years ago, the uncle that taught me to play golf asked if he could use it and I never saw it again. Since he gave me countless clubs, balls and other accessories over the years I could never afford I never said a word to him about it.

Anyway, this is the least high-tech putter in the world.......and I can't get enough of it.

So, does it make me a complete idiot to give up a really nice Odyssey putter to go back to a Fautless blade from 1987?

Yes, I know it's about what feels right and what allows me to hole putts. I guess I'm looking for others to help me rationalize making the switch. My putting went south years ago and I'm looking for a way to bring back that old spark. As a few others have mentioned, seeing Phil going back to the way he putted years ago made me think about how I putted years ago.

My old style was similar to his and what Dave Stockton teaches. At some point that fell out of favor and I got caught up in the hype. So, I'm going back, and I think my old blade putter is going with me. My forward press was killed by a pro while I lived in Texas and he tried to make me straight back and straight through.

No more, I am going back to everything I did before including a slightly open stance. If the ball goes in I don't care if I look like I'm putting in a style from 1992.

Thanks for letting me talk this out. I needed to get it clear in my mind and I don't have many golfing buddies in the Columbus area since I am a transplant here.

A few other people made a similar epiphany about putting, this one is mine.

I love the blade putters. I have the odyssey 882 which is the blade style putter, and I would love a wilson 8802 putter. I use my odyssey as my living room practice putter. I think with a putter especially it's all about feel. if it makes you confident to have a rusted out beat to crap $10 kmart putter than i would use that. i don't think a price tag on a putter has anything to do with the effectiveness of the putter. If it works for you i would do it.

The 882 is my next putter. I was enamored with the Ping Anser a few weeks ago, but the 882 is it. Over the last two weeks, I've lost a couple on ebay - one got away from me when I fell asleep and only went for $18 - which was a killer.

I love mine, I have the same Scotty cameron cord grip on my 882 as my Cameron putter. I know if for some reason I couldn't putt with my cameron, the odyssey would be in the bag. good luck, sould be able to find one relatively cheap

I almost bought the putter below a couple times this summer. It felt so good compared to the old Wilson Staff blade putter I used this year. I actually ended up buying a Cleveland Classic 2 because it was 1/2 the cost, but next summer if the Cleveland fails me, the Rife will probably be mine.

I've heard good things about RIFE putters. Messed around with one at ProGolf one day, had a decent feel to it. i liked how the ball rolled off the face of the putter.

Got my Wilson 8802 a few weeks ago. Have only played one round with it so far. Still need to get used to the balance of it. I am looking to start a collection at some point, and that collection will surely include a Napa and a Bimini somewhere along the line.
In reply to OP, Mickelson uses a blade putter and does that lean thing so i will try that at some point tomorrow.
What I Play:
Wilson Mini Stand Bag | PING G10, 10.5°, Proforce V2 HL S | PING G5, 15°, 18°, Aldila NV 75 S | PING G5, 19°, Aldila VS Proto By You 80 S
Mizuno MX200 4-PW S | Ping Tour W 50/12 X | Ping Tour W 58/TS X | A selection of putters, all 35.5 inches.

It was Mickelson's move back to the forward press and his old putting style that made a bunch of people on the forum go back too. A pro took my forward press away a few years back and put me in the modern straight back, straight through stance and stroke.

To hell with it. I always putter best with a slightly open stance and in more of a crouch with a forward press so I'm going back to it. Picking up the blade putter is part of that. I also have a knock-off on an Anser putter made for the Uncle I mentioned in my first post. It has his name engraved in the bottom and is toe weighted so it swings itself shut like a traditional blade. It might make an appearance in my bag if the traditional blade doesn't work out.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
