I am in the market for new irons, since I absolutely hate my X-22's, I've been told the reason I'm having problems is probably a combination of the uniflex shafts, and the fact that I learned to play with irons with a lot less offset, and can't adjust to the offset in the X-22's.

I went and demo'd a buttload of new irons today, and here's what I found out for me:

Cleveland CG7's, regular flex steel shafts: Hit a 7 iron, average distance 138 yards, slices were common.

TaylorMade Burners, regular flex steel shafts: Hit the 7 iron average 146 yards, ball flight was very high.

TaylorMade Burner XD, regular flex graphite shaft: Hit the 6 iron, average 138 yards, shaft was 3/4" longer than the CG7's and Burner. Did not like the way the club felt at all on impact.

Mizuno MX200, regular flex graphite shaft: Hit the 7 iron, average 148 yards, solid feeling club, mid ball flight.

Nike CCI, non forged, regular flex, graphite shaft: Hit the 7 iron, average 147 yards, decent feeling club.

My favorite that I demo'd today:

The TaylorMade Burner Tour Model, steel shaft, regular flex. Only got to hit the 6 iron, average 178 yards. Long, straight ball flight, perfect trajectory.

I think I've found my new clubs. I thought Tour models were geared towards lower handicaps than mine, but there was just something about that club that I really liked. It felt good in my hands, good on impact, and gave me the feeling that every shot was going to be perfect.

Most likely, the reason you are having problems is due to:
1. Your swing/posture/set up (your own fault, not the club)
2. You probably need different shafts fitted for you

But, mostly because you need lessons. Good players can hit any type of iron/offset given the right shaft. Get fitted for the right shafts and use the rest of the money for lessons.

To the above....I believe you have hit the nail on the head.

I agree with the above. Also, I don't trust the launch monitors. I would find a place that has a real range and watch the ball flight with your own eyes. Also, get fitted (a real fitting with a true professional at a place like I mentioned above).

agreed ...... but at the same time i didnt do too well with callaway irons either. as soon as i switched ....bang. reg flex might not be stiff enough either. secondly GET FITTED!!! it makes a world of difference.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
