Starting a charity event

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if any of you have experience in setting up a charity event? I recently lost a family member to breast cancer and would really like to set up a tourny to support her son. Sadly, i don't think that i will be able to get the tourny up and running until the spring so i may have to set it up in her honor and have the benefits go towards cancer research. If anyone has any suggestions on how to go about doing this i would greatly appreciate it.

Well you have to think about who you want to invite and get a bunch of people (I would guess family members in this case) to help you run it. Talk to the pro at the course and tell them you are interested in setting up a tournament. A lot of tournaments go to charity which is always nice. Set up some flyers and sign up information and see how it turns out. Hopefully you can get a bunch of friends and coworkers at least so that anyone else is just extra and you have a good time regardless at least for the first time since you will be a little unsure about the turnout and whatnot.

Some of my friends set up a tournament at our course at school for a classmate that died in a car accident. The money goes toward a scholarship in her name.

Remember about hole sponsors and selling ladies tees and mulligans. Also I know its not gonna be real competitive for the most part but its a good idea to have people tending the holes to cash in ladies tees and mulligans and to spot cheaters.

We run an event every year. The first thing you have to do after deciding whether you are going to do it or not is to form a small committee. Have a committe chair to organize everyone and make sure all are on the same page. Then assign one person to collect hole sponsors ($100 a hole, beverage cart sponsor, driving range sponsor, etc), one person to collect raffle items, one person to market/distribute flyers and another to recruit volunteers to work the course and raffle spots.

Sencond, start negotiating with a course. This is really the crux of it all. If you get a pro that is into the charity, you can get your per person round costs down to the $15 range. This allows you to maximize the amount going to the charity. The pro can also help you with things like being the point of contact, running the competition part of the event and collecting the entry fees for you.

If the charity you are benefitting has a large local presence, see if you can partner with them. Some restaurants will donate food for a dinner if proceeds are going to a charity they like.

We don't have mulligans and all of that. We present it as an actual competitive event and feel that is how we distinguish ourselves from the other charity events.

What are the particulars on your tournament? I'd like to take a shot at winning it next year

The tournament is called the Heron Ridge Fall Classic. It's usually held in early to mid October. Here are the results from this years tourney:

Very interesting...Keep the info coming guys. MILLEN, please keep us informed of any obstacles and ofcourse the smooth parts. I too am looking to do something like this in a yr or so.
