Seems if you do a bit of loopholing you get a golfcart (electric that is) for free/almost free on this Cash for clunkers thingy.

We had this "economic stimuls" program too - but getting a free golf cart with it - that is seriously messed up, and its seems to be not even limited - get as many as you want...

Was a bit confused since the WSJ article was written as it is still going on, but it seems there is something else - if you buy a neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV) aka "green" car" you get a tax credit of 5300$ and with some other stuff it might be almost the same as free. So it seems your window of opportunity is still open :)

I don't recall the exact specifics, but Arizona had a program like this awhile back that was a great cost to the state government. They offered a significant state tax credit for purchase of an electric vehicle, and it didn't have to be a new one. So people would buy a used golf cart, take the tax credit, then sell the cart to someone else who would do the same. I understand it cost the state hundreds of millions.

If I'm not mistaken, you had to have title of your clunker for at least a year to take advantage of CFC. Sounds like Arizona wasn't specific enough with theirs.

Are you allowed to bring your own cart to a golf course? I feel like that would be frowned upon.

Not sure it applies everywhere but there are a few members at my club who have their own carts. They just keep them with the course carts and the course hires them out but whenever the owner is there they obviously use it.

Storage of the cart on course would probably the biggest problem. There are courses that offer these options along with recharching and maintenance (for a monthly fee of course), then there are courses who dont have the space even if they wanted to.

But since your cart has to be road worthy anyways and if you live close by to a golf course you can drive to the course with it and take it back home again. The course cant really forbid you to bring your own cart, despite losing out in some revenue.

One course I go to charges a private cart contract for people who have their own. I suppose that's common for courses with houses. I would like to see the looks I get when I bring a cart to the course on a 4-wheeler trailer every time I play. Don't think I haven't thought about it. I think it would save money over time.

Word.

I play for free at my course, but carts are $10 for members. I walked 100+ rounds this year. I'm not very good at math, but I'm sure I saved a couple of bucks.

I know of a couple of local courses that prohibit carts from the outside. They don't want to get into one of those situations where someone brings in a cart with all sorts of accesories and bells and whistles. It's a slippery slope once you let 1 person do it.

For the record...I walk. I wish it was for some noble reason, but really it's just to save money. It's gotta be a huge profit source considering a cart is almost as much as or equal to greens fees at every facility I go to. What I find weird is that everybody here talks about walking, but almost everywhere I go I'm the only one hoofing it. Some places I even feel like I'm upsetting the status quo. I absolutely will not golf at a place that charges a "trail fee" for walking. That's like putting a coin lock on the bathroom.
