Hi everyone.

I'm just getting back in to the game after about a 16-year hiatus, and I figured one of the best tools to improve my game would be a good internet forum. From what I can tell, this place looks like the best one out there.

I played a lot of golf when I was a kid, up until I was around 15, then gave it up to pursue other sports. I'm 31 now and, after a lot of deliberation, I've decided that golf will be the sport that will be the most rewarding over the longest period of time.

I haven't even played a round yet because I thought I should spend some time at the range first. Even signed up for lessons--mainly because a good golfer I know suggested I take a couple and get fitted for clubs (I'm not rich, but honestly there aren't any used irons anywhere I've found that will fit me).

No idea what my handicap is--I just guessed. I shot in the 80's when I was a kid, but obviously it will take a while to get back there.

I went out to Houston's Wildcat golf course today and hit at the range. I'm interested if anyone knows about good courses with cheap rates, in or around Houston. I live near the Galleria, but I'm not opposed to traveling a little to play a round.

I have about a million questions, but I'll try not to ask them all at once.

My roommate is from Huntsville and has a little house on a deer lease. We go up there several times a year, so I might take you up on the offer. Thanks.

Welcome, Bart. If you live in the Galleria then you are near two decent public courses, Memorial Park Golf Course, just a few miles Northeast, and Herman Park golf course, closer to the Medical Center (just south of Downtown).

Memorial has a decent driving range (mats only) open till 9PM (balls sold till 8PM), but closed on Tuesdays. Memorial also has a decent chipping and putting area at no cost.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

      Awesome. We were originally going to play Quail Ridge but ended up moving some things around and are going to do the following when we go in May Day 1 Tobacco Road Day 2 Southern Pines and Pine Needles Day 3 Tot Hill Farm There are a couple good course vlog/matches on YouTube at Southern Pines, it looks awesome.

      I got two trips lined up this year.  First, Pinehurst next month. Qual Ridge, Mid Pins, Southern Pines 😁, Mid South, Talamore. I am looking forward to playing Southern Pines since it got redone.  Second, a trip to eastern Wisconsin in early August. Whistling Straights, Blackwolf Run, Erin Hills.

      You are probably doing the right thing in having more fairway woods or hybrids in your bag than irons. Just easier to maximize ball speed for you swing speed to get the proper gaps.  A driver is teed up, so you have more leeway there. The 7-wood is probably more optimized for carry for you. A slower swing speed needs higher launch and spin to keep the ball in the air. With the 3-wood, it probably launches too low with not enough spin to keep it in the air.  If you are not going to go get lessons, or do some sort of swing speed training, go get fitted for clubs. Clearly your mix-match of equipment is not optimized.

      32 putts are average for a single digit handicap golfer. Limiting three putting is the biggest task. Speed control is the most important aspect of putting. Probably the 2nd most important is aim.  The putter is going to rotate open a bit on the backstroke. It might stay square to the arc of the putting stroke, but that does mean the face opens up a bit on the backstroke when measured against where the face is oriented at address. Go get a putter lesson as well.
