So if you dont already know, i live in hawaii and we can pretty much play golf all year. this fall, however im headed off to Saint Louis University and im starting to realize seasonal changes. i was wondering if golf companies release new clubs/balls through the fall-winter period.

im asking because i was thinking about buying a new driver and 5 wood (whether it be a hybrid or just another 5 wood) but i probably wont be able to play much in the fall just because i wont have a car and i'll probably be busy with my first months of college and i figure i might as well wait until i get home for christmas to buy them because either the clubs im looking at now will be cheaper, or there will be new equipment on the market.

Spring (March) and now (August) are the traditional times. Titleist sticks that that schedule pretty well, as do some other companies (HiBore fairway woods from Cleveland, new drivers from TaylorMade, etc. are all coming around in August, some new stuff from Ping...).

This has what, exactly, to do with the topic or answering the questions asked?

To expand upon my first comment, prutkows, I suggest you wait until spring. You may see some new clubs come out in March, and if you're on your college team, you should be able to get clubs from the manufacturers really inexpensively. Dave Koster (NCGolfer) can attest to that.

Prutkows, Congratulations, SLU's a great university, and it's smack dab in the middle of a very fun town. Don't worry too much, I imagine once you get settled in, you'll be getting out quite a bit. St. Louis has some great public courses, like Gateway National, and Ann-Briar which I'm sure you will be seeing very soon. To answer your question, it seems like all the companies these days are coming out with far too many clubs too quickly. Even traditionally slow ones like Ping and Titleist and relative newcomers like Bridgestone. I'd wait until December and find some new "old" clubs. Next time I'm in the bi-city area visiting family, I'll drop you a PM and hopefully if the redesign is done, we be one of the first to play the new Bellerive!

so no thoughts on how us collegate players can get discounts on clubs? come on, you brought it up, dont leave me hangin!!! :) :) :)

Prutkows,

yeah i visited a few months back, its a really nice campus. its surrounded by bars though, not really my scene, haha. yeah, i was thinking about waiting until i fly back to hawaii for christmas vacation to pickup the new clubs. that way i can practice with them while im home and then take them back with me to St louis. im hoping to drop my scores quite a bit so i can get on the team in fall 2007.

The USGA has changed the rules on amateurs accepting free clubs over the past few years. I think college teams can now get clubs either free or at a huge discount from manufacturers. It just depends on what club companies your school usually works with. Like basketball coaches have shoe contracts and have their teams wear the same shoes, some golf coaches have exclusives with the club companies.

Or you could always call the customer service dept. of a club company and ask to speak to someone in their collegiate department and see how they can help you. Good luck!

    • Day 244 (3 Jan 24) - Friday men’s group round - a really solid front nine at one over 37 from the gold tees. Out of the 8 pars - six were up and downs…the lone bogie included a water ball penalty stroke.  At the turn, game shifted to my typical reality as it was a 45 with open and close dbls on 10 and 18, with five bogies and two pars strewn in between. Still a solid 82 overall - with 28 total putts (incl one 3 putt) 5 GIR and 5 nGIR.   Oh the highlight of the day - the ladies’ teaching pro was in our foursome and she was very complimentary of my overall approach and wedge game.  It made those drills in the backyard well worth the time spent.
