saw this article in Southland Golf. sucks to see a quality company go under like nickent. i played nickent irons for the past 4 years and loved the product and service they provided. so far the last couple of years have been rough on the industry...hogan bought by callaway and disappeared, mcgreggor sold to golfsmith, nickent is done for...on the flipside, maybe i should pick up some new hybrids on the cheap...

There's nothing more tragic about Nickent's demise than any other company that made quality products that not enough people were buying. Golf goes in cycles - a lot of the top clubmakers from my youth are no more - or they're a shadow of their former self, having products released in name only, under license by another company.

Spalding - various irons including Top Flite Ben Hogan - irons, balls, putters clothing, and persimmon and maple woods Ram - still around - but garbage compared to their heyday MacGregor - irons, putters, balls, clothing, the best persimmon woods ever - EVER!! Powerbilt - irons and pretty darned good persimmon woods Clubs that are so closely linked to a single player can't help but struggle when that player either retires or changes companies (MacGregor and Nicklaus or Ram and Watson) How many failed clubmaking ventures have great players like Arnold Palmer and Nick Price been involved with? Oh, Nick Price wants to buy into my company? Bail out!!! How many people were in the market for Wilson Staff wedges after Padraig Harrington butchered that par 3 at Hazeltine? Some day even clubs with "TW" on them will be sold only on ebay. Can anyone name a single great player who plays (played) a bag full of Nickent?

I thought Cleveland was in trouble based on their "buy a new set and get a completely new set in a couple years for free" campaign. That reeks of desparation.

Adidias/Taylor Made may be in trouble if they try to take over the golf world - they need to reel in their new club releases as some are not that good. coughR9cough Nike has the advantage of other businesses propping up their golf business - I never see anyone gaming the swoosh in Alberta, but I know their irons must be selling somewhere. I think Mizuno will always be around - their woods may be sketchy, but they make arguably the best forged irons in the business. Good products and good word of mouth only last for so long - see MacGregor and Hogan relaunch attempts. Ping will always be around, because like VW Jettas, there are so many people drinking the koolaid they can't lose. We'll see what their newer, gaudier irons do. Funny that Titleist's new ZM irons are a little more feng shui or minimalist design while Ping is adding more sparkly badging to their irons. I bet they both sell like hotcakes.

that sucks, i wasn't aware of nickent going out of business. that's too bad, i would hope someone would buy them out, but then again, what happened to hogan with callaway, nickent might just go away forever....a shame is what this really is....hate seeing great companies go down...

It's said to see good companies go under but golf is full of these stories. Sonartec comes to mind, but there will be a company that will rise up and take Nickents place. Golf is a tough market, when the economy tanks the way it has your bound to see companies fail.

Cleveland was already sold off in '07. Sold to SRI Sports, the parent company of Srixon, a Japanese company. Otherwise they'd probably already be belly up.

That stink's i was a Nickent fan boy for awhile I played a 3dx square driver, 3dx red irons , arc 58 deg wedge and pipe 001 putter. I still play the irons and wedge and always thought they were a good company. Once there website went to .net I had a feeling that was going to happen.

yeah, this happened last week. i hope we start seeing all the Nickent irons and hybrids for sale on ebay from sellers like 3BallsGolf now. I'd love to pick up a set of Arc Blades or 4DX Pro's on the cheap.
my bag is getting full of club manufacturers that are no longer in business

Regarding MacGregor... I had an online chat with a Golfsmith sales rep after his company bought MacGregor.

He's pretty optimistic that Golfsmith bought MacGregor for the future, and will sponsor design work under its brand name. Also, here's a mildly promising msg on the MacG website:
http://www.macgregorgolf.com/

I played MacGregor MT irons - w/ #1 MacGregor Tourney Lite stiff shafts - from 1974 to 1994. I added MT woods in 1983. I still have these clubs in a vintage bag -ah, the memories. And Sean_Miller is right about those persimmon woods. That's why I waited so long to switch to metal woods.

On Nickent : Is N just flat gone, or will someone buy the name and designs?

OH no! that's very sad. I just bought a used Nickent Hybrid #3.
It is so amazing. It's my favorite club.... even more than my 7 iron.

I can't believe they went under. Aren't they supposed to have the #1 hybrid used in the tour?

Ever since I got my 3dx square driver, I fell in love with Nickent and their clubs were getting in bag one after another. The next thing you know my bag are completely taken by Nickent. So bad they are going under. It is time to stock up their clubs now and I just got a set of 4DX pro cheap from rockbottom.

It seemed like they had a good strategy. Weren't they sponsoring a lot of young guys on smaller tours in the hopes that they'd get to the bigs and stay loyal to the company? I guess they just ran out of time. Too bad.
