Hi Everyone,

There's a set of brand new 804OS irons available to me at $499.00, I was just wondering:

a) Is this a good deal?
b) Is this a fairly forgiving entry into the forged iron world?
c) Will this club last as long (or longer) than my new CG4's with regards to playability? I'm thinking they may be a little bit more of a "player's" club with out going completely overboard to something I can't hit consistently.

Just looking for some feeback, I've hit them and the 704's at Golf Galaxy and they felt good, but I'm always hesitant to believe those simulators with regards to ball flight. I like my new irons, but if this is a really good deal I'm not going to pass it up.

Hi Everyone,

It seems to be the going rate for these clubs. I wouldn't say that is a rock bottom bargain but just a typical price right now.

b) Is this a fairly forgiving entry into the forged iron world?

This is a

very forgiving entry into the forged iron world. I owned a set of these for a while and they were quite responsive as forged clubs should be. They have a fair amount of offset which allows you to square the club well. In terms of forgiveness, I think they contend well with other forgiving game-improvement irons.

I can't really speak to how they stack up against the CG4's but the two clubs look very similar. The 804.OS is definitely not a players club as they have a bigger head and generous offset. They would contend with game improvement clubs that Callaway, Ping, and Cleveland produce.

Don't expect the 804.OS to be a players club. They are forged but are definitely a forgiving game improvement iron. Billy Mayfair is the only pro that uses (or used) them that I can think of and he was accustomed to playing Ping irons. The transition to Titleist was easy with the size and playability of the 804's. After looking at the CG4 I wouldn't recommend getting the 804.OS because the clubs look too similar. I'd get out and hit a set first. Make sure you know what shaft you want because you want to be properly fit if you do end up getting them.

If you like your irons I don't think you'd be gaining much by getting the 804's. The 704's are going to be more a players club compared to the 804. Get out and hit them before you buy a set. Just my opinion.

Hi Everyone,

SuaSponteMn, Why are you so interested in entering the "forged iron world?" Forged vs. cast is more about marketing these days than any actual performance. They're just two different ways of obtaining a similar end product. A filet mingion can be pan roasted or grilled, but both ways taste just as good, right? I don't think you're going to see much difference between your CG-4's and the 804.OS, in fact your CG-4's are softer on the rockwell hardness scale than the stainless used in the 804's.

SuaSponteMn,

I suppose I should clarify:

I'm an equipment junkie and I've never owned a set of forged irons. Although given the two responses I've received, I probably just stick with what I bought. Thanks for the additional information on the CG4's though, I've been dealing with a slight case of buyers remorse on them this week. I think some if it stems from rust on the cavities of the 7 and 9 irons, which I now have to send back to Cleveland...

I love my 804.OS irons, but it doesn't sound like the $499 deal would be worth it in your situation. If you could get them for $400, it might be a better deal for you.

As for the irons, I hit them very well, and I'm a mid-handicapper I suppose. They are very forgiving as Jeff mentioned, and they have helped straighten out my iron play over the past year or so.

I can't say anything but good things about them, and I'll just leave it at that.

$499 is too much. They can be had cheaper. They are an excellent game improvement forged club. Very forgiving and....I have a set right now on EBay under the name mohler1. Reserve is $325. I am selling because I prefer my X-18s and bought the Titleist from a golf shop that was going out of business. It was a cheap experiment. Hope this helps. Moe

SuaSponteMn,

i'm sorry, this is completely off topic but a filet mingion is definitely not as good pan roasted :)

personally i dont know the difference between forged and cast but im pretty sure callaway x-14's are cast? and the second i got my new set of 690.cb's a year ago it felt so much better hitting with forged irons.

a) Is this a good deal?

SuaSponteMn,

Like Thrash13, I am a mid-handicapper and can't say enough about these clubs. I have two sets, the first I bought new for $699 CDN several months ago and the second, I bought used on eBay for ~$280 CDN several weeks ago for travel. Although quite forgiving, they do provide you with the ability to 'work' the ball and you certainly know when you've mishit it. I had posted a question regarding the finish i.e. how easily they can be re-finished as they get 'marked' very easily. Gas_Can explained this was fairly typical and there is no easy way to refinish them. Although I have no experience with the CG4s, I would highly recommend the 804s. You might also want to consider picking up a used set on eBay...

    • I don’t think that’s even relevant to the debate. Jack didn’t have that upbringing or training …and that’s just part of the equation that favors Tiger. Tiger didn’t have the luxury of playing against weak fields. Jack didn’t have the technology for training. All part of the reality. Just like those who might say Tiger’s injuries took away what could’ve been even more wins. So what? He DID have injuries and that’s the reality.    I think the argument’s been made very well that taking what they each accomplished IN TOTALITY, Tiger has by far the greater accomplishments. Put aside all the could’ve/should’ve/would’ve/ factors and just focus on what was actually done. How well did each golfer perform and against what opponents? Tiger easily wins this.

    • I'm not going to be "SMART" on my reply. I was in and out of the hospital since the first week in December with complicated Diverticulitis.  Lost 30 pounds, a lot of muscle mass. First week in April I finally had surgery, where the doc took out about 18" of my colon. So my goal is simply to PLAY GOLF.  Was at the range today for the first time.  Felt great to swing a club. Had zero distance...only hit my 7 iron about 140 yards. Will be great to be out on the course, but I have no expectations of lowering my handicap this year. People, be grateful for your health and ability to play.
