Just wanted some opinions on some new irons i was looking for.

i was fitted recently for tm tour preferred irons with +2 lie and project x 6.5 shafts. Now if i can get these irons for a good price then great but i think they may be more then i can afford. so i was checking out rockbottom and see they have a set of 5-pw Nickent 4dx pro irons with the Nippon NS Pro 1180GH stiff. i was thinking get these and one of their 3 /4 hybrid sets.

my question is can i get these nickent lie adjusted easily ? i think there forged vs cast and will i end up reshafting them to projectx or can i get away with the nippon.

Alittle history of my golf game to put some prospective on my delema, this is my first season playing seriously. end of last season before lessons and consistant golf i was hitting 100+ all the time and not counting all shots :)
Now after lessons and playing regularly my game has really come around. consistantly scoreing around the 80's, lowest round this year a 78.

Look at it like this why don't you get fitted for clubs you can afford. If you get the nickents and put all project x shafts in them it will cost you almost as much as the TM. I would just wait and get fitted for something you like in your price range instead of guessing what will or won't work for you. Good Luck

yes, those Nickents are extremly soft and will easily adjust. they are also AWESOME irons. much better than the TM's you were thinking about getting IMHO. i also think you will like the Nippons better than the Project X's too. but thats also just my humble opinion

How do the shafts compare, the nippon in the nickent 4dx and the project x 6.5. when fitted i do tend to have a high trajectory and alot of spin. so the px 6.5 really brought the #'s down and my yardages went up atleast 10 yards. appreciate the responces, i plan on hitting the 4dx irons tomorrow. tho am abit apprehensive about using a 3/4 hybrid. I do hear hybrids described as legal cheating :P so why not.

So i went to golftown today and tried out the nickent 4dx pro's irons felt great as did the irons, still not sure how the stiff nippons compare to the px6.5's but the fella said i could easily get them lie adjusted +2. Im still allittle apprehensive about using 3/4 hybrid. but if the pros are going along those lines now and if it'll make the game alittle less frustrating then why not :)

also the price is right :)

i was a little hesitant to use hybrids too at one time, but now i have 2 of them in my bag, including a 3/4 hybrid. personally i think you will love it. the 4DX line is awesome. and the 4dx Pro's are on my list of irons to purchase in the future

Rock solid advice.

You obviously have the skills and raw ability for the game....look at how far you've come already. That is some unreal progress. DO NOT limit yourself by compromising proper fit on your sticks. I can't emphasize this enough. It doens't nessesarily mean that you'll have to spend a great deal more, either. Every stick in my bag was purchased brand new and all but the 3 wood and putter were custom fit and made by the manf. for me. Here are the discounts I scored on each vs. the msrp.
  • driver: paid 67 percent the msrp
  • 3wood: paid 57 percent the msrp
  • irons and wedges: paid 65 percent of the msrp
  • putter: paid 85 percent of the msrp
  • hybrid: paid full price but traded in old clubs...out of pocket virtually nothing for the stick
You just have to shop around and find what works best for you. Every manf most likely makes a set of sticks that will best fit your game. Judging by the scores you've shot already....I'd think you are well served by the "players" clubs you looked at. Your skills are gonna be awesome...don't mask them with super game improvement technology that hinders you from pulling off the full range of shots that you will be capable of. Look around...you'll find something in the price range you want to spend.

i think i might pull the trigger on a set of callaway x forged 4-pw with px 6.5 shafts. they have a similar look to the ones i was fitted for and i've read good things on em. i hit the 2009 version and hit them well and the feedback was nice on the forged club with abit of forgivness. There around 200ish for a used set . so i think its a good deal.

or should i wait till 2010 ? i do live in canada so all winter ill be hitting balls from mats indoors :P

I think i'll grab a adams pro gold 20* 3 hybrid to replace the 3, price on them has droped with the matrix ozik shaft. might drop more when the black is released.

Callaway X Forged is a blade iron with a touch of user-friendliness. X Forged (2009) actually made it into the bottom of Game Improvement category (using Maltby's 6-category MPF ratings). It scored 621, a few points higher than the 2009 X22 Tour model, which should be the

easier club to hit. If you like them, get them now. They're in your desired flex - a bit of luck - and probably won't last very long at only $200 in cost. Sounds like someone played them for a few weeks, and then figured they didn't fit their game. Sounds like Merry Christmas to me!

Snake Eye's forged club head. Buy the shafts on ebay, you should be able to get brand new set of professionally pulled shafts. Put the clubs together, it's very easy and get the grips done professionally if you're not comfortable with this part, although grips are easy too.

I've been drooling over the Snake Eyes forged blades, but there's nothing wrong with my CG2's, so I'll be playing these until they're done...

Dub is correct, you don't have to pay a lot to get what you want. I pulled the stock shafts out of my CG2's (Ebay) and replaced them with Project X I bought off Ebay. I also re-gripped with the correct size grips (Ebay). My club pro kept telling me that my grip size was fine. Until I researched it myself, I would have never known. My hand is average size, but my longest finger is 1/2 inch longer than average. Mid size grips was the best equipment improvement I've ever made

IMO, Grip and shaft are the most important components for irons

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
