I have a chance to get a slightly used CG 14 gap wedge for about $45. It's a 50*, so no one snapped it up right away.

Question: Do the Zip Grooves tend to shred the ball on square hits? Is the ball reusable after you juice one, backing it up?

Also, has anyone used the 54.12 in CG 14 as a sand wedge? Does it get the ball up OK? Any comparison to 56*?

Thanks.

No shredding that I've noticed with my 54° (standard bounce, does great in the sand). I hit a semi-flop shot over a small tree with it today, the ball spun back a few feet feet but there was no damage to the Srixon AD333 I was playing.

I didn't seen any shredding on my Srixon Z-Stars all summer with my CG12s or my CG14s at all.

Someone beat me to the used CG14 wedges (duh!).

Anyway, I ended up getting a new CG14 GW 50.08. It was reduced price, and I got some more off with a coupon.

Test-hit it with my X20 PW and AW to verify yardstick. PW (45.07) went about 100-105 yrds. and AW (50.11) went about 85-90 yds. with slight draw or fade.

CG14 went about 87-92 yds., and four out of 10 shots hit the swing monitor's bullseye target center - dead straight.

Compared to the AW, the CG14 has 3º less bounce, a sole .2" less wide, and a clubhead .3" less wide. Hopefully, it will be cleaner going through the grass than the AW.

Also, the CG14 shots felt softer with the cushion insert on the back of the clubface.
(I'm having RSI pain in my right arm from too much computer mousing at work, so I may get Sensicore inserts in my other shafts when I regrip. I've lost about 10 yds. per club in distance since mid-summer.)

If I get a warm day I'll try it out "in the wild."

I've noticed very little scuffing/shredding from my CG14s in comparison to some of the wedges that guys I frequently play with use (esp. Vega and Scratch) wedges. At the same time, CG14s are not as spinny as those--a good middle of the road option for those wanting decent feel, some additional forgiveness and a nice heavy head but not the highest spin (or wear on the ball), I think.

my playing partner had the 56 degree CG14 and he could get quite a bit of spin from it. He never played tour balls but he would be able to play 18 holes with one ball (TaylorMade Burner) hitting one wedge shot on each hole (by this i don't mean only full shots but bunker shots, chips, flops, ect.) My answer would be no, they don't rip balls apart like vokeys do (just as a matter of comparison).

    • Hey, thanks for the feedback. I do lift weights but I’m also adding yoga or Pilates for mobility and flexibility to my routine.
    • Day 18: 2026.01.20 Continuing work on arm raise during backswing. Starting to feel less weird, especially the slower I go. Looking like a busy week so might be the weekend before I can hit some balls.
    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
