I am looking at picking up a used set of irons, and am going between the Titleist AP1's and the Cleveland CG Reds. I play to a 10 handicap. My Nike CCI Forged irons were stolen this summer/fall and I am looking to buy a new set. I was really solid 6-P with the CCI Forged's but terrible with the other clubs.

Any advice on irons similar to those I mentioned? I'm looking to stay in the sub $400 price range on a used set, thanks for your help!

There are a couple of Mizuno MP-57's for sale in the sale/trade section of the forum. IMO, these are the best irons for a mid handicap for under $400.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm a little scared of forged irons just because of my lack of being able to hit 3-5 irons on my only other set of forged irons. Are the Mizuno MP-57's forged also?

Practically all Mizunos are forged.

It has to do with the small cavity and high center of gravity, not the fact that they're forged. That's why they're tough to hit. Mizuno comes out every year with forged sets targeted for people with handicaps in the mid-teens.

Just a side note, I don't think the AP1s and CG Reds are comparable irons. I'd say the AP2s are more like the CG Reds than the AP1s are. Try PING i10s, CG Reds, TM r7 tps (or the Tour Preferreds), and the AP1s. They're all easier to hit IMO than MP-57s, especially in the longer irons.

Go with a Nike or Mizzy set 6- pw. Get hybrids or Nike slingshots for the remainder of bag and never fear a long iron shot again.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
