Our local library has at least a whole shelf, maybe two shelves, of fairly recent books on golf instruction, as well as another shelf about golf and golfers. Your library may be as well stocked. Check yours out.

I would also like to know what are the most beneficial books for someone who is interested in Golf to read. I personally have heard good things about Hogan's fundamentals, and the Stack and Tilt book. What are some other great, must reads!?

There is a whole section in the forum called 'reading room' that discusses golf books. You might want to browse throught there to see what opinions others have about a variety of golf books.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I've read the following and would recommend reading them in this order
  1. Ben Hogan's 5 Fundamentals.
  2. Harvey Penick's Little Red Book
  3. The Stack & Tilt Swing, Bennett and Plummer
  4. The Art of Scoring, The Art of the Short Game and The Art of Putting, Stan Utley
  5. Golf My Way, Jack Nicholas
  6. Essentials of the Swing, Hank Haney

A good one I found at half priced books for 5 bucks was "How to get up and down from 40 yards and in" -Tom Watson,

It is a very simple read and the drawing were done by Anthony Ravielli (that may not be spelled right, it was the same artist that did the 5 Lessons). So, it would be a neat one to add to the collection.

Are you looking for instructional books? Or more general interest, golf related books?

On the instructional front, I like all the Harvey Penick books, especially the green one -- If You Play Golf, You're My Friend. It's got a lot of Penick wisdom, but they're hidden withing really great stories and tales. I actually read this one before the Little Red Book. The fact most of the stories are a page or two long makes it an easy, entertaining read.

I also really got a lot out of Dr. Bob Rotella's first book -- Golf is a a Game of Confidence. It's so common sense based that you're bound to think, "no duh, that's pretty obvious" over and over, but to read it associated with big name golfers is very reassuring. I think Dr. Bob and Harvey Penick pair very well.

If you want something more general interest, I'd highly recommend Tom Coyne's Paper Tiger. It's a year-long tale of his attempt at making it on tour by giving up his job, family, etc., in order to pursue the dream. Very entertaining book, and eye-opening as well.

    • Day 159 1-19 Flow drill while attempting to add arch in wrist on downswing. Not where it needs to be but felt good working on swing flow.
    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.
    • That depends what you do within those two.  Are they your only options?   Check out Fit for Golf if you get a moment.  It's linked on the sidebar;  I did it for two years, stopped for a really bad reason, and I plan to get back to it soon.   Mike Carroll also has a great free podcast about a lot of topics in golf fitness.
    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
