I'm looking at a set of used irons that are 1" longer than standard. Can I simply cut 1" off and will it be the same as a standard length? I guess I'm asking if the tapering of the club is the same.

Thanks!

Yes, you'll be able to have them cut at the butt end and they'll be the same as stock. Of course, they'll have to be re-gripped, but you'll be fine. Has lie angle been adjusted as well? What clubs are you looking at and what shafts do they have?

They'll be the same length as standard, but I believe the flex will be slightly off. Not a full flex, but I believe cutting down a shaft stiffens it somewhat.

well... it WILL change the performance of the club as well.

They'll be the same

right... a little more stiff and the swingweight will change (lessen) as well.

My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

They'll be the same

My understanding has always been that it's stiffened only if it's cut from the tip, and not the butt. I could be mistaken though.

And yes, in this case, the swingweight would change, but the swingweight would be higher than stock with it being an inch longer. Once it's trimmed back down to stock length, it goes back to what the stock swingweight was.

Thanks guys. I'm still a little confused though. So let me rephrase this. If I have two DG S300 shafts, one standard length and one 1" longer. If you cut the 1" off the longer one, is it now exactly the same as the standard length?

Yes, that is correct, if you cut from the butt end. As a matter of fact, if you go to GolfSmith.com and look at the

TT DG shaft, you'll see that it only comes in one length, 41". From there, it's just cut to spec for each individual iron, so there's nothing really special about the length from one shaft to the next. They're all cut from the standard 41" shaft.
