Odd question I know but please bear with me!

I have recently picked up a new set of clubs (Pi7s) and am currently trying to work out what to carry.

I basically want to take the short irons from the new set as I can hit them well and keep the long irons from my existing set as they are more forgiving ... Originally I took 4-6 from the Di7s set and 7-GW from the Pi7s. Felt a little odd first round out so I have just checked the net and I realised that I was playing with a 6.5 degree gap in my setup. However if I introduce the 6 iron from the Pi7 set it cuts the gap down to exactly half that....

If I do carry both then I am only left with two "woods" (I carry 56 and 60 wedges too) which would be my driver and new 3H.

Any suggestions?

Well I cant tell you what clubs to carry, but if it were me I would practice with the new iron set. On the other hand, I would assume the lowest iron of your old set would have a lower loft than the new set. This would help cover the yardage gap between your longer clubs anyway.

If you want to stick with the 2 brand set get your 6 and 7 iron lofts adjusted to decrease the gap.

Odd question I know but please bear with me!

I hear you, and I feel you...but it seems counter productive to me.....If I were i your position, I stick one club (modify it if you must), and practice with it. You may realize that you don't need to adjust anything.

My though process would lead to me to believe that the overall composition of the clubs will be different, for example club length, total club weight, shaft length, weight, and kick point may be different from you current setup, then I would reason the the gap you have may not be as big as you think. You may realize that the gap is a natural transition between the two sets....but the only way to find out is to stick to your new club structure. I have been reading on the matter of consistent club weight in the set, i.e. having all clubs be D4, maybe in range of D3-D4, but not for example D1 and D7 as the clubs will feel much different... I would think that is something you should consider. The other option is to ditch (temporarily) your all set and hit the range to "break in" your new set... just MHO... Good luck!
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

Odd question I know but please bear with me!

I remember when a top LPGA player (I think it was either Beth Daniel or Betsy King) carried two 9-irons - different brands.

If you're going with more than one 6-iron, I'd recommend 3. And make sure you put them all side by side in the bag. Work on your evil laugh too.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
