I was sitting here thinking about my round yesterday and noticed the shot of the day thread and thought about which of my shots yesterday would be my "shot of the day". To my surprise, it was a beautiful pitch shot that saved me a par. Back when I had a higher handicap, it would have been the 3 wood that got me on the green in two on a par five or the 290 yard drive on number 1. As my handicap has dropped, my "shot of the day" has really changed and this realization shocked me.

As your handicap has changed, have you noticed a similar trend or am I just an oddball on this?

It's often a pitch, chip or a putt that qualifies for me these days. My long game is problematical at best, but I still have some control over the short game. I would never say that a drive was my "shot of the the day", and only occasionally is it an approach iron shot.

My shot of the day changes as the day goes on lol. I hit a 279 drive on the first hole and ended up with birdie....but my shot of the day was after I hit a par 3 really fat. The ball went about 40 yards. Then I step up with a 52 wedge and hit the stick from 110 for a tap in par. What a shot!

A great drive does not produce an immediate benefit, it just sets up the next shot. Everyone hits long drives, especially at the Sand Trap. However, a great pitch shot that flies true and skids to a stop inches from the hole (or even goes in!) directly impacts your score. For my money, a well struck wedge that behaves exactly as planned and sets up a birdie, is generally "shot of the day" worthy.
