I just can't decide.

I've just got some brand new 755 irons off ebay and like them.

My old irons Wilson di7 were more forgiving though and I've still got them, they will be on ebay soon I think.

The 755's don't go as far and I sometimes feel a bit of a wuss playing a 9 even considering an 8 where I had a wedge before. I know that the 755's are softer lofted and built for control more than distance. BUT!!

One problem with the Wilson - a massive gap 9 degrees between wedges.

Which iron should I use?

I used to play golf for 3 years about 15 years ago but only got to about 22 handicap.

I played once or twice a year up until middle of last year then really got into it play 2 or 3 times a week now; sometimes only 9 holes, got to earn a living.

Have started to have lessons now; had 2 so far and planning one a fortnight, possibly one a month for rest of this year. The pro is really good. We've done work on posture and ball position which he says has improved dramatically. I'm working now on tempo. I used to get into an address position that created tension in my body and then swing at lightning pace.

I now have a good pre-shot routine, can get into an address position that is relaxed and make a much smoother swing. My bad shots now are usually when I snatch away from the ball, don't complete backswing, get even quicker and hit a complete duffer. Ahh.

I've got down to 14 but have creeped back up to 15 now. My aspiration is by end of year to get to single figures. I get lots of chance to practise for 30 minutes most days. I drive past my club practise ground most lunchtimes.

I know the 755's will suit me better eventually but I'm not sure I'm there yet.

I also have a couple of Ben Ross Hybrids 16 and 20 degree which I don't use a the minute.

What should I stick in the bag do you think?

I went from DI7s to PI7s, lost a little distance initially but quickly gained it back and now have maybe 5 more yards out of most irons. The distance was a nonissue for me as I was looking for accuracy and I believe I got it has I am hitting a lot more greens now. I suspect the uniflex shafts were the issue for me, the DI7s seemed to be the wildest irons I have ever played, I think the ball flight was just too high and the wind had its way with my ball flight more than the lower flight of the DG shafts I now play. Maybe all mental but whatever I am much happier with the PI7s and I think it is the shafts. I thought about reshafting the DIs but got the new set cheaper than I could have reshafted for.

Nine-degree gap? if this is between PW and SW, consider a gap wedge.

From what you've said, we know you are retooling your game and have about a 14 HDCP right now. Also, I assume Lincolnshire is in England. Not sure what type of terrain you play on. But, we don't know how far you hit your Driver or your 6-iron, or the clubhead speed for either. No indication of what kind of shafts you have / need. Being able to hit new irons is different from really learning how to use them. It took me the entire summer to really feel comfortable with my X20s. I would talk to your pro about filling out your bag to match your new swing / tactics. Once you get your clubs picked, why now make a sig-line listing of what's in your bag? That way, we can have a better idea of how you approach the game. Good luck this season!

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.Β
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don'tΒ likeΒ being wrong β€” I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once:Β "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
