I was wondering if anybody can give me any advise on this. I am prone to hitting my irons towards the toe of the club, thus making me a very in consistent with these tools. I have tried to step closer to the ball but it feels too close and I end up completely miss hitting it. One can someone tell me what you think I am doing wrong and two any drills you recomend to fix this.

How tall are you? You may want to do a fitting. I think hitting on the toe means you may need a longer shaft. It could also be your posture and distance you stand from the ball.

Im 5'8 and yup I had my irons fitted, my ball striking improved after a few rounds and getting used to the irons however when I miss hit it always tends to be on the toes.

I'd get a lesson, or a video camera tape of you swing. You may be offballance.

My hitting on the toe was caused by coming over the top which got me coming across the impact zone from the outside, to make contact I then had to drag the club back resulting in toe hits. It was not a club fitting issue just a swing flaw which I am working to correct.

My over the top is caused by leaning toward the target on my backswing very slightly. I would have never noticed without a lesson.

If an over the top move results in poor swing path, does it also encourage a poor clubhead release? If the toe does not begin crossing over (release) then wouldn't you hit it on the toe no matter what your swingpath was? It seems to me that an over the top move with a properl release would lead to a pull / fade or a pull. Not stating that this is the case. Just suspect that this would be the connection.

Coming over the top encourages an early release which decreases club head speed. Whether the clubface is square to the path of travel or open or closed is probably more related to grip and grip pressure. My miss hits tend to be pull hooks.

It is a combination of coming over the top and coming up out of the swing too quickly. If the left shoulder swings left too fast and you are casting the club you will have a tendency to toe hit the ball. The thing to do is start your downswing by planting your left heel and pulling down with the left arm. The result will be a delayed hit and less chance of hitting from the top. I am assuming you are right handed.

Another thing to check is your balance through the swing. When I hit it on the toe, it is usually because I was leaning forward at the start of the downswing and had to move my upper body back to keep from falling on my face. Result was a toe hit as my upper body moved back away from the ball.

Thanks for all the comments guys, yes I am right handed. I did get "a" lesson not too long ago and have video online that I can see from time to time with before and after shots. My old swing is kind of weird because it starts with a backswing that is upright and on my downswing starts to flaten first. So I may be doing the same thing I was doing before.

    • August 2010 Woodfin Ridge 18th hole Playing in a large tournament with a slew of friends and the last day was two man best ball. The 18th, when it was bent grass, was very fast due to a steep slope on the right side. I had seen many people over the years putt off the green from above the hole. I hit a great drive and 3W to 30’ left of the hole. With everyone watching my partner hit it way too fast and never high enough and his ball rolled all the way to the bottom of the green.  I hit mine much higher and the ball came to rest about 20” above the hole. Then it slowly started trickling towards the hole for a walkoff eagle! Nobody said anything except my partner who was yelling pretty loudly. I looked at the crowd and told them it was okay to clap because it was a great putt, and they gave me a bunch of polite golf claps and brought me a beer!
    • Day 127: 5/2/24 Stack Full Speed spectrum training session 6/24. Training speed was 5 mph higher than previous high, as was e-speed. Still not as high as I have done in previous programs, but just 1 mph lower. Battling through a neck issue, and possible trigger fingers. Happy with results.
    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
    • +12 47, and never lost a ball or had a penalty. Got the snap hooks off the tee for the first 3 holes. So, playing the punch out game. Probably had like 20 putts. Bad short game day. The greens were weirdly firm but slow. I just don’t get spin out of the rough. I had a SW, with good height hit middle half of the green and end up almost off the back of the green. I know what I was doing with the full swing. Bad habits creeping in.
    • 9 years and counting. Lil chipped paint here and there but still going strong. Also have an 18 deg driving iron that I got a couple of years ago which is doing well too. @iacastried it and I think he liked it.
