Hi, just signed up to this fab place.

Basically I took up golf 2 years ago, I'd played before so knew most of the rules, basics etc. so I bought a complete set of Cougar clubs D, 3w, 5w, 3h 4-SW.

Not knowing my ability at the time I got these as i'd say super game improvement clubs. I ended up starting at 17 handicap and I'm down to 15, I usually only play half the year too.

Im happy with my current driver but want to upgrade the rest of my bag. I always look around online for sales and discounts. ATM I think I would like to get an 08 Burner 3w, Burner 3h & 4h, and r7 irons. Then I would look at a wedge set either Titleist or Cleveland.

Can anyone recommend or argue against the r7 irons in regards to my playing level. I have a friend who has some and i must say i like hitting them a lot!!! :)

Open to any suggestions people, so give me your thoughts.

Peace

OK the R7 are not the latest and greatest but you probably will not be able to tell the performance difference and the cost difference between those and the R9 makes a deal on the R7 the way to go. At the end of the day if you can hit a tin can on the end of a garden cane well then thats what you go for. If you feel the R7 will give you that edge you are looking for, and at a good price, then pull the trigger. You could spend months trawling around golf shops trying ever club under the sun and still come back to the R7.

From the top:

R9 TP Driver Stiff 9.5deg
R9 TP 4-Wood Stiff 17deg
X-Forged Prototype 3-9 Stiff (rifle flighted) 48deg, 52deg, 56deg, 60deg CG12 Wedges Newport Longneck TeI3 One Black

Thanks for the reply. Yeh I see the r7 are a couple years old, but i find their price is in my range more so than a set of r9's. Just out of curiosity how often does a player like yourself change clubs. When new technology comes out? When the clubs are worn to the bone?

Also what will be the difference between reg or stiff irons. Will it be mainly launch angle or directional change.

This is the best argument in favor of

any set of irons. 35 handicap, want to play blades? Well, can you hit them and like them a lot? Good reason, go ahead. Tour player, want ultra-game improvement irons? Like 'em? Go ahead. K.J. did. Based on that you like hitting your friend's irons, go get yourself a set.

This is shaft flex, and it's in response to how fast you swing. It's not like regular produces one thing and stiff produces another. It's easy to fit for this. A very very general (and not always accurate) rule is based on how far you hit your 7-iron. True Temper's website has a fitting based on a few other things. And any pro - or even most salesmen - can fit you for it quite easily.

Thanks Shin,

I'll look at the website. ATM i'm looking at buying these of rock bottom as they are having a sale. Considerably cheaper than going to a pro shop here in Australia, prices are outrageous. Do you think the pro shop would let me hit some balls without buying the sticks.

Thanks Shin,

In the states, it's fairly common practice to wander into a golf shop, hit balls, and wander out. Tell them you're considering a purchase, and still making up your mind.

In regards to wedges, what year models incorporate the new groove change. I want the old grooves, but new wedges, say Cleveland CG12's.

CG14's are not the new specs. Great wedges that you can get for around 75 bucks now. You'll love them.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
