I won a Callaway FT-iZ 10* Reg Flex RH Driver which won't come to me for another 11-15 weeks. . . . But as a high-hc'er who is improving, would I be better off trading that driver off for a last year model of something (Cobra S9-1 M Speed Offset comes to mind ) and get a better 3-wood as well? Or would I benefit vastly from having the latest and greatest?

I got into golf last year and bought a Complete set of Walter Hagen T3's (Golf Galaxy), budget clubs I know but hey they got me started. I pretty much despise going to the tee-box with the driver that I have now.... However I feel really comfortable using everything else that came in the bag, although I'm not great with the 3 wood or 3 hybrid...

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Thanks,
Shane

I'll trade you even for my 10* FT-IQ stiff...it's forgiving as hell...and i'm looking to get something i can work? it's got about 5 rounds on it with no blems or anything wrong with it.?

My plan is to sell the one I got because I have an FT-iQ that I'm happy with (plus my dad gave it to me, so I'd feel kind of bad ditching it since it does actually work for me). I have more need for a hybrid or 3W, and perhaps a new putter, so I'm hoping to be able to pick up a couple of those in exchange.

The 3-4 month delay before they ship is painful, though. Between that and the chance that the market gets flooded with these things I'm not holding my breath that near-MSRP will be an easy sell when it arrives. If the "like new" price does hold until then, great, but I'm trying not to spend the money in my mind until I have it in my pocket.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

Yeah that'd be a real bummer for it to be going for super cheap... Guess I'll have to wait and see what the market is like when I get it in my hand.

I'd keep it to use as a conversation piece when playing with someone who may not have heard about the contest:

Player: Hey, nice looking driver you've got there!
You: Yeah, Phil Mickelson gave it to me.
Player: Mickelson gave you a club?
You: Right after he won at Augusta.
Player: You mean he gave you one of his clubs after winning the Masters?
You: Yeah, he wanted me to have a souvenier as thanks for supporting him.
Player: Wow!!! You must be one of his best friends for him to give you one of his Masters clubs!
You: Well, you know....you help people the best that you can. That's just who I am.....

Should be good for at least a full round of total admiration and ego boost for you!

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
