Here are a couple videos of my swing that I took this week while I was out practicing. I think I am taking the club too far inside on the takeaway, and I am not sure of the position at the top...

Anyway Let me know what you think and see. I am really starting to commit to my practice and I think that video taping is going to help me take it to the next level.

You've got a nice swing man, how long have you been playing? Your takeaway isn't inside far enough to cause problems at this point, and your position at the top is great from the side.

When watching your swing face-on, it's easy to see that you've got a bit of a reverse weight shift. Is this intentional? If not, I'd work on allowing your weight to shift as your hips turn... at the top try to position your left shoulder just inside your right toes. Properly timing a good weight shift will help your distance and your swing plane.

Thanks! I have been playing since last October, so about a year and a half now.

I definitely have a reverse weight shift that I want to correct. Anyone know drills to work on this? I feel like it is robbing some distance and consistency.

Ryan, Minus one for the braves hat..but you make it back up w the 2002 avatar. Not sure if you drive one or have seen one on TV. I like your swing, there are a few things that stand out to me although I am no expert. With your driver, your hands seem so high/stretched out, I always thought a more relaxed arm position with arms hanging down rather than out.

With the head on 9 iron, I like the simplicity of your swing, great tempo, smooth, it looks like you would be able to depend on this swing in any situation,,,rainy days, tournament play , large $$ on the line. I would throw it out there that maybe the reverse C finish position is a bit excessive. and maybe trying to finish more upright and on the left side might help long term. By the end of your clip you get to that position, Think Trevino walking out of his swing, maybe not to that degree but somewhere between the 2 . your back will thank you many years down the road.

Thanks! I have been playing since last October, so about a year and a half now.

When I was learning the game, my dad would make me take the club to the top and try and lift my left foot. You should be able to slightly lift your left foot without loosing too much balance. Obviously this is a drill where you don't actually hit the ball. Although silly, it did help me think of loading up on my right side. And yes, it is robbing distance.

Also, make sure as your shift your weight you are rotating your hips rather than sliding side to side. This is an important fundamental to grasp.

Haha sorry about the hat, but thats my car in the avatar. I have owned it for about 3 and a half years. Anyway, back on topic.

I am working on rotating my hips instead of sliding. I will probably post a couple videos next week depending on how much I can get out and hit balls. Thankls for the input!

But I've heard before that you want to stay centered over the on the backswing, which I've always interpreted as meaning you want to keep you weight relatively evenly distributed between your front and back foot on the backswing. I've thought of this when watching pros' swings on youtube, and it's always looked to me like that's approximately what they do.

One of my problems has been overswinging, and one of the things that caused was putting my weight too far back to allow me to rotate my hips (too far), which led to (a less extreme) Daly style position at the top. To put the question another way, I've been told many times not to slide my hips back during the backswing. Is there some other way to shift weight back, or are these pieces of advice (putting weight on the back foot, not sliding hips back) at odds?

The weight should be on the inside of your right foot at the top of the backswing, not evenly distributed. If you pause the swing at the top it looks like my hips are in a pretty good position and my weight is where it should be. I just need to work on staying over the ball a little more, and getting the weight more to my left side.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open. 
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
    • Day 47 - 2024-11-16 Light backswing work with about 3 or 4 rehearsals for every ball hit. Only about ten minutes while waiting for a potential member to show up (he was 25 minutes late). 😛 
    • Idk but I would have to imagine that a putter that is aimed where you think it's aimed would be the most important aspect of a putter
