first off i dont know why i wanted to post this achievement of mine on the forum. But i just felt an irresistible urge to do it so here goes.
okay , ive been practicing for a week now for an upcoming national event in our golf club. Chipping, sand, putting, driver u name it , ive hit them all in athe space of 7 days like crazy.
practising 4 hours at astretch, me moms gotten crazy.=D
so were standing on the 10th tee for an early teoff at 8. Surprisingly ther are 4 flights ahead of us. Now as i understand when our turn comes and a flight who has played the previous nine gets to the tee, we have to let them pass right? we ll thats what happened and then another flight came with the same reason to be alllowed to go through. but we had been waiting far too long to let them go through and a si recall the rulebook doesnt say anything about a second priority flight (correct me if i am wrong)
So anyway i have a match with my dad and this other friend of mine whose a good 10 handicap.
They both tee off in spectacular styl with drives right in the middle of the fairway and i catch the ball thin and it rolls nmaybe 40-50 yards on to the left handside trees. Chip out from there and go on to make a 7 =S
(par 4) at that point i thought well this is going to be another one of THOSE days. Second hole pushed my approach to the right of the green, making a very very difficult up and down. but i manged to hold the 7 footer for par. This single putting form continued on to the next hole and the next where i akmost chipped in for birdie. having now gotten a few pars under my belt i proceedeed to the 135 yard par3 14th. feeling very confident i pulled out my gap wedge and decided to hit a three quarter easy swing onto the green, pin was just on. Shouldnt be an issue right? wrong i pushed my wedge by some 15 yards and it kicked further right, giving me an uphill approach shot to a downwards sloping gree, with 20 or so yards bet ween us. i took out my lob wedge and decided to have acrack. Lofted the hell out of it, playing one of those Phil mickelson flop shots, 6 inches from the hole. Wild par. =D
i absoltley smoked my drive on the next three holes, but managed to find the greenside bunker on the 15th...making double bogey =S , the fairway on the 16th-almost duffed my approach just getting on the green and made par, and then on the 17th where my ball landed into the fairway bunker 270 yards from the tee in a headwind. =/ i thought no problm , i'll lay this ball at about 100 yards giving me a sand wedge into the par 5 green. instead i pulled my 6 iron from the bnker into the Goddamn trees! =@ i was so cross with myself and then i missed a 7 footer for par there , with the kind of putting form i'd had it was surprising.
last hole of the back nine , 562 yard par 5. slight fade got a bad kick and rolled in tot he trees just of the fairway . at about 270 yards from the green. i pulled out my old 3 wood(large head) and hit a very low cut which somehow found its way on to the middle of the fairway some 60 yards from the pin. =D i hit my lobwdge perfect distance from there but wa s15 feet away =? managed a par and moved to the front nine.
Now the first two holes on the froont have temporary green. Manged to hit them both in GIR and if u've seen them u'd know its a near impossible job holding the ball on them , but my lob wedge was doing wonders for me. A par and a birdie and suddenly i was 1 under on the front. =D
Filled with euphoria i steeped to the third tee, 175 yard par 3 with strong wind from the left and pin in the center, i pulld out my 8 iron and THWACK !!! hit it without considering the wind factor. my ball as a result soared to the right of the green, with bunkers in between =S *i hate bunkers*
Kher i chipped onto the green into the head wind, so it was one of the easier shots i'd played during the round and held the 6 footer for par.
4th hole again a temporary green, man i hate them as well, manged to get on in three, and would have made the par had it not been for the stupidest greens manger on the planet. *i'll kill u next time i c u* =D
5th hole 200 yard par 3, no wind at all. *surprisingly* Very tight pin location just in betwenn the front two bunkers with maybe 7 yards between them . I hit a pretty decent 6 iron, landing the ball 3 feet over the left hand bunker and it rolled 6 or 7 feet jusst on the edge of a second left handside b unker----now bwfore the round everyoine was saying that "these irons wont give u spin", "thy wont hold on the green " and blah blah blah!. Well IN YOUR FACES!. =D putted in two to make par and on to the 6 th wher i played my first bad tee shot with the driver of the day. snap hooked it . chipped ot from there into the fairway bunker then 100 yards wher i again pushed my wedge and chipped on to the green making bogey (6 on a par 5)
on the next two holes i got on in three due to some bad sand wedge shots and made 1 putt on the seventh and two putts on the 8th (another temporary green)
up until this point i wanted to shoot only my second round in the 70s,as the 9th hole par 5 is very very eagleable. but that bogey on the 8th had cost me so i was 9 over par. *curse u temp grreens*=D oh and i was winning from my partners by 3 strokes =D
Last hole bust out the driver in an attempt to make it down th slope to 150 yards, (shortish par 5 but you have to nail the drive to have achance of hitting the greenin two... cuz theres water just before the gree, OB to the left, JUngle on the right , and OB ahead of the green. Plus a strong headwind , which makes a downhill 210 yard shot(if u dont clear the slope-drive about 260) to ba all that more tricky) . Anyway i pulled my driver and then hit a 7 iron to 100 yards. =D this next shot is probably what prompted this saga of mine =P i hit an absolutelly perfect sand wedge and it did all it could to go in the whole only to spin back 3 feet from the hole. My kid sister and mom were there to drive us home and they saw the shot and i felt so happy then =) i made that for birdie and finished 8 over par=80.
i had 29 putts. which i contribute to my succes. perhaps if i hadnt pushed 3 or 4 of my wedge shots , that 70s score would have materialized. Thanks for the patience guys.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
