I'm relatively new to the Seattle area, and I'm still hunting for good courses. I normally play at Legion Memorial in Everett, and I like Willow's Run as well. I've played at Gold Mountain, Trilogy and Lynnwood. Any others I should check out?

I use to Ranger at TALL CHIEF in Fall City. My wife and I stayed at the park and I worked for the Pro there as a Ranger. It's right down the road a mile or two from Snoqualmie Falls. I painted the totem pole to the intrance to the RV Park. Took me a month to get it done but it was fun.

Hey! Welcome to the area. I'm a little south of you... down in Olympia. I played Legion Memorial a few years back... it was an enjoyable track. Gold Mountain is definitely a winner. I was up there a couple times last week.

On this side of Seattle you've got The Links and the Woodlands at Hawk's Prairie off of exit 111 and Fort Lewis Golf Course at exit 116. All three of those courses are worth playing. The greens are far better at the two Hawks Prairie courses but the scenery wins out at Fort Lewis. Near Gold Mountain is Trophy Lake . Excellent course, beautiful scenery, great greens, and very well maintained. I played there last week. Worth your time. Discovery Bay in Port Townsend is pretty fun and I understand they are doing some improvements. North of Seattle you've got Kayak Point which is a very challenging and well maintained wooded course. I've played that a few times and it is a real treat. One of the best. Futher north still is Avalon Golf Links in Burlington. I've only played that once. It is very nice, but make sure you don't play it when its been raining because the soil has a lot of clay in it and it gets mushy. Way up near Bellingham is Shuksan Golf Club which is definitely worth a play. There are some pretty wacky elevation changes there. Good challenge and lots of fun. Plenty of water to lose balls in too. Thats what comes to mind off the top of my head. There are tons more courses I haven't played, especially in the Seattle area. The inlaws are up in Burlington so I get to play those courses from time to time. We'll have to get out for a round sometime.

I know this is an old thread but maybe you guys are still around. I'm a new player in Lynnwood and it would be cool to meet some people.

I'm also a north-seattle/south snohomish county golfer.

I like to play at Kayak (already mentioned), Lynnwood (short, but otherwise decent), Jackson Park (seattle muni, pretty good, lots of up and down holes).

Here's the best website for checking courses around seattle: www.seattlegolfguide.com

I've actually been evaluating some private clubs in the north end, it seems like a pretty decent deal.

I've only done the nine-hole at Battle Creek so far and it was pretty nice. I am thinking of trying Lynnwood Municipal since it doesn't have any par-fives and they are pretty short holes.

Other than the Lack of Par 5s, Lynnwood is actually quite decent. They have a nice putting green, a chipping area and a sand trap, and a decent course. In fact, my best 3 rounds have all been at Lynnwood, even accomodating for the low par of the course. Even some 180+ and 200+ yard par 3s.

How was battle creek? I've seen the sign for it many times on my way to Kayak, but never played.

Well it's the ONLY course I've ever played so keep that in mind. It has an 18-hole but I haven't played it. I played the 9-hole course only. The majority of them are pretty short...most of them being just over 100 yards. I believe they do have one around 150 yards and another that is over 200 yards. Most of them are slightly uphill with a few flat, and one (off the top of my head) was downhill. My fiance and I both enjoyed ourselves. It seemed decently well kept and had a lot of trees that protected other players from my insane slices. I felt it had a nice variety, and it was pretty inexpensive.

I an Northwest, but about as north west as you can go in the US, Alaska to be specific. If anyone ever finds themselfs in Alaska for any reason then you should definately check out one or more of the courses here in Anchorage.

Glad to see this thread got resurrected.

If you're in the Lynnwood area, head down I-5 a few exits and check out the Nile GC. Also a short course, but a better and more fun layout than Lynnwood muni. There's also Walter Hall up the road a bit - that's a fun course as well, and one of the best deals in the area.

Any of you gents feel free to shoot me a PM anytime if you want to go play or need to fill a spot in your group. I'm always game. :)

Wow, thanks for pointing out Walter Hall! At least from their website they look nicer than a lot of courses and decently priced. They also have a better website than most. I hope it's as good as it looks, that isn't far from me!

Under the pull carts section of their pricing schedule they list a $6 trail fee...what is that?

If you have your own power cart, they charge you $6 to bring it on the course.

It's a pretty fun course. It's on the easier side as courses around here go (slope of 109 from the whites iirc), but there's some challenging holes and backing up to the blues makes it a very different course. :)

Strange that they put that under the pull carts section. So if I rent a power or pull cart from them I don't pay the trail fee? Do you think the course is walkable...a power cart would be nice but I would rather skip paying that much I think...the exercise couldn't hurt me.

I need something on the easier side, this will be my first shot at an 18-hole course (same for my fiance who will be joining me). As of right now I've read a book, been driving, chipping, putting and done one nine-hole course. I definitely need something easy! By the way...they have black, blue, white and gold tees. What does each color mean?

    • When you are penalized for hitting into the sand trap the penalty is having to hit it out of the sand, not out of three inches of water. A sand trap is not the same as a water hazard. A sand trap is not supposed to be under water. It is a unique condition caused  by weather and poor drainage. Most local leagues like ours allow the free drop in this type of situation, as long as there is no area in the bunker to legally drop. This is what I’m talking about, sometimes the official rules of golf don’t align with common sense. That’s why they are finally starting to change them. For example, when wind blows your ball off the green. That was a stupid rule. People being able to call the tv network to say they saw a players ball move. That was a stupid rule. I’m just saying, these are rules made up a long time ago, and it’s time to modernize them.
    • Consider it another way: normally, it's a two-stroke penalty to move your ball out of a bunker (unplayable). The ACC reduces it to just one.
    • No, hitting into a hazard that is supposed to be avoided and is designed to be penalizing is not the same as hitting it into the middle of the fairway.   You are penalized because you hit it into a hazard. Based on your logic let's say you hit it into a red staked penalty area and you could normally play it but it's in temporary casual water from rain. Would you expect a free drop from there too??
    • They could have declared it GUR, sure. It is. It's temporary water, and as I said before, an abnormal course condition (ACC). That's what rule 16 is about — ACCs. No, a bunker ≠ the middle of the fairway. You are penalized because you hit it into a bunker. As for the rest… let's stick to the topic. Yep.
    • It's not dumb. It's dumb to randomly allow a free drop that provides an advantage you don't deserve. And your committee had the option of determining it GUR. Did you talk to them?
