If you hit a ball back at someone you better hope you can whoop their arse if it comes to it. You also better be prepared to pay up in court if you happen to hit one of them and yes the act "could" be charged as criminal assault.

But the whole deal reminds me of the scene in Sideways when the main character does just that! LOLOLOL

This has happened to me several times. Luckily (and coincidentally), they were all on holes that had thick woods / ravines / out of bounds running down the sides. So instead of hitting back at them, I just teed up their ball and tagged my driver deep into the forest. On all occassions, they quit. And on one occassion, the group just left the course (or went to a different 9). Of course, I waited to do this until it was obvious that it was intentional.

Completely rude and uncalled for, especially if they decline a play through.
