Well I've decided I need some more forgiving irons while I really try to sink my teeth into this game called golf. I was wondering if you guys had some input concerning these to iron sets. I want something forgiving but not something that is so easy that it will completely mask a flaw in my swing. Thanks!

I would stay away from the Big Bertha Irons! They will only be good for little while, once you start to improuve you are going to find you will be able to do less with them. The Big Bertha irons are very very hard to hit of tight lies in the longer Irons.

Im not a big fan of the callaway x18 irons. But they are much better then the Big Bertha irons in the long run! Once you improuve you, these Irons will be much eaiser to hit of tight lies and also much better out of deep rough.

Also the Big Bertha irons are the more forgiving but if you buy there, I would say in about 6 months to 1 year you will look to replace them, if you get the x18's then I think you would be much happier! And have them for much longer!

Thanks for the input! I am getting them off of callawaygolfpreowned.com that is why I am trying to narrow it down to the affordable ones. If anyone else has suggestions let me know but try to keep it to clubs available on that sight because I have a 185$ credit.

I'd stay away from the Big Berthas as well. They are good irons, but I think you'd outgrow them pretty quickly. I got rid of my Big Bertha 2006 irons this season, and I am very happy I did. I have been playing much better with my Wilson Staff Di9 irons, which are much more fun to play as well. In Callaway, you can't really go wrong with the X-18 or X-20 irons, or I suppose the FT or Fusion irons. Good luck.

The FT are a little pricey for me. Im leaning towards the x18's.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
